Widely regarded as some of the most underrated work to ever leave a GM design studio, the 1969 Chevelle wears a distinctly sculpted body with tapered front fenders, a rounded beltline and Chevrolet's hallmark long-hood/short-deck profile. It's a familiar shape, and one that served General Motors well with over half a million A-bodies sold during the 1969 model year. A clean cruiser that was subjected to an extensive, body-off restoration, this Chevelle utilizes many NOS components to roll much nicer than when it left the factory. That rebuild, began with a fully stripped body, progressed to new GM fenders and added acid-dipped doors and an acid-dipped hood. With that metalwork complete, correct LeMans Blue 2-stage was capped with a new Kee Auto Top and decorated in familiar Super Sport stripes. And naturally, correct Super Sport ornamentation complements details like polished mirrors and authentic T3 headlights.

ORIGINAL, NUMBERS-MATCHING POWER

If you walked in to your local Chevrolet dealer in 1969 and said you wanted a Chevelle with a great combination of power and livability, chances are you'd receive an engine just like the 396 cubic inch L35 V8 you see here. Professionally rebuilt and fully detailed, this impressive mill utilizes hydraulic lifters, a nodular crank and oval-port closed chamber heads to, according to the factory, turn stout 10.25 to 1 compression into a solid 325 horsepower. At the top of the block, a stainless-trimmed, single-snorkel air cleaner weaves oxygen into a steady stream of high octane fossils that's provided by a reliable Quadrajet carburetor. Below that carb, a sea of brilliant Chevy Orange paint covers the block from its correct, cast iron intake all the way to its stamped steel oil pan. An old school points distributor shoots spark through 7mm High Temperature cables. Mirrored valve covers reflect factory exhaust manifolds. In front of those tubes, a correct radiator sports GM branded hoses and familiar tower clamps. Aesthetically, the whole setup shows exceptionally well, from the car's fresh decals to its Satin Black fender sheen. And, just as expected, a 1969-exclusive 3955272 casting number follows a correct “JK” suffix stamp and a matching 460007 partial VIN.

SPEAKING OF ORIGINAL AND NUMBERS-MATCHING

That original, numbers-matching 396 is followed by an original, numbers-matching Turbo-Hydramatic 400 3-speed, which is authenticated by a correct “CC 69” assembly stamp and a matching 460007 partial VIN. From there, power is transferred to a tough 12-bolt rear axle that, per its correct “CW” build stamp, is packed with familiar 3.31 gears. That impressive drivetrain rolls on a correct F41 Sport Suspension, which has been restored with correct, optional power steering. Stops are provided by correct power front disc and rear drum brakes. The 396 gets rowdy through aluminized pipes, factory replacement mufflers and polished stainless tips. At the corners, stainless-trimmed Super Sport Wheels spin F70-14 Goodyear Polyglas Custom Wide Treads. Like its body, the car's chassis was fully stripped and lovingly redressed during the detailed restoration. And clean LeMans Blue floors show that someone really sweated the quality of this Chevelle's build.
