2020 Woodward Dream Cruise Still On, For Now
The annual Woodward Dream Cruise automotive event will continue on as planned, event organizers recently said.
According to a report from Detroit Free Press, event president Michael Lary said that the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic would not stop the event from going forward this coming August, at least for now. “Please know that we are working to deliver the same caliber of family-fun activities that you have come to expect for the past 25 years,” Lary said in an email.
The Woodward Dream Cruise brings in roughly 1.5 million people every year, with around 40,000 classic cars, muscle cars, customs, street rods, and collectibles participating. The Cruise originally launched in 1995, and has grown to become one of the biggest automotive events in the world, now including ancillary events and activities that extend the Cruise into a weeklong automotive celebration.
Framed as a nostalgic throwback to the American automotive culture of the ‘50s and ‘60s, participants cruise up and down Woodward Avenue in Metropolitan Detroit, Michigan. While cruising typically falls in line with social distancing guidelines, the event “continues to rely on the strong relationships [the event has] with cruisers, sponsors, exhibitors, spectators, and enthusiasts,” Lary said.
Although event organizers say the event will go ahead as scheduled on August 15th, it remains to be seen how participants and supporting businesses will fare in three months.
For now, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a number of disruptions, delays, and cancelations around the automotive industry. That includes General Motors, which has postponed the reveal of the new all-electric Cadillac Lyriq crossover and GMC Hummer EV pickup truck, as well as the reveal for the Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing and Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing. Additionally, model refreshes planned for the 2021 model year have also been delayed, and are now slated for the 2022 model year, including that of the 2022 Chevrolet Equinox and 2022 Chevrolet Traverse.
