Amelia Motoring Film Exhibition returns for 2018

It’s tough to be the new kid on the block, but last year’s inaugural Amelia Motoring Film Exhibition(AMFE) proved to be such a success that Popcorn Octane Productions is bringing it back for 2018. This year’s exhibition moves to a new venue, and features a mix of short films, features films, and interactive dialogue sessions designed to appeal to a wide range of enthusiasts.
Last year, the evening was held in downtown Fernandina Beach, which serves up plenty of charm but not-quite-enough parking. For 2018, the AMFE, which takes place on Thursday, March 8, moves to the Amelia River Golf Club, located at 4477 Buccaneer Trail on Amelia Island. The evening begins with a cash bar and hors d’oeuvres at 6:00, and to set the stage, cars participating in the Hagerty Touring Series – Amelia Island or Bust Edition will be on display.
The evening begins with a showing of Hagerty’s Hemi Engine Build short film, with Larry Webster and Ben Woodworth on hand for a question and answer session. Next up is a showing of a recent Barn Find Hunter video, with host Tom Cotter on hand to discuss his adventures (and, perhaps, his uncanny ability to sniff out the cars no one else can find).
IndyCar will then present a tribute to the remarkable life of racer, constructor, inventor and champion of motorsports Dan Gurney, who died in January at age 86. Following will be the short film Endurance Icon: Hurley Haywood, which recaps highlights from his remarkable sports car racing career, much of it spent with the Jacksonville-based Brumos Racing team.
The evening’s main event will be a showing of the feature film No Limits – Impossible is Just a Word, which followed double-amputee and Paralympic athlete Alex Zanardi as he trained to compete in the 2015 24 Hours of Spa, where he raced a BMW Z4 with teammates Timo Glock and Bruno Spengler.
Zanardi was a major star in the U.S.-based CART series, but left for a stint in Formula 1 before returning to CART in 2001. In September 2001, racing at Germany’s EuroSpeedway Lausitz in the American Memorial, Zanardi suffered a horrific high-speed crash that cost him both his legs, and very nearly his life. In the years since, Zanardi has served as an inspiration for fans the world over, returning to Touring Car racing in 2004 and, later, dominating in the Paralympic sport of hand cycling.
