One of the coolest features present in the forthcoming 2021 Ford Bronco is Trail Turn Assist, or what off-roaders typically refer to as “the dig.” A couple of months ago, we were able to watch this feature in action, but it was somewhat difficult to see. Now, a new video has surfaced that gives us a better look at how Ford’s Trail Turn Assist works.
The feature is part of the new Bronco’s Trail Toolbox, which gives owners a suite of exclusive technologies including Trail Control, which is essentially cruise control for low-speed trail driving. Trail Turn Assist tightens off-road turning radiuses by 40 percent through torque vectoring, and Trail One-Pedal Drive acceleration/braking control makes for more precise slow-mode rock crawling.
The Trail Turn Assist feature is controlled via the Hero switches on the dashboard, and essentially makes three-point turns obsolete. Pressing the button locks up the inside rear wheel while cornering, making for an ultra-tight turning radius that’s perfect for those places on the trails where there just isn’t room to back up and turn around.
The Hero switches are located directly above the Bronco’s infotainment screen on top of the dash, and also feature buttons that control the front locking differential, rear locking differential, electronic stability control, and hazard lights.
Trail Turn Assist is available on both two- and four-door Bronco models, and with either Ford’s 2.3L EcoBoost I4 or 2.7L EcoBoost V6. Unfortunately, however, it is only available with FoMoCo’s ten-speed automatic transmission, not the new seven-speed manual transmission with a crawler gear. This is because Ford developed the feature specifically to work with the automatic, which also just so happens to be the only transmission available with the off-road focused Sasquatch package (at least for now).
