The GM Heritage Center, which houses a collection of 600 cars and trucks from the automaker’s history, will soon be relocated to Grand Blanc Township in Michigan, bringing it closer to GM’s hometown.

According to local outlet 12 News, GM made the announcement on Thursday, September 29th that its Heritage Center would be moved to what was formerly the Customer Care and After Sales Headquarters in Grand Blanc Township. The office building, which is located near the intersection of I-475 and Hill Road, will be converted into a showroom for the myriad of historic GM vehicles.

Currently, the GM Heritage Center, which opened in 2004, is located in Sterling Heights, Michigan. The automaker says that relocating its collection will not only grant more space, but will also put the museum in a location that is closer to GM’s birthplace of Flint. In fact, GM had been searching for a larger space to host its Heritage Center when the building in Grand Blanc Township became available in 2021.

Customer Care and After Sales employees were transferred to the GM Global Technical Center in Warren, Michigan, although many of them have been working remotely as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

At this time, the automaker has not yet indicated when the new GM Heritage Center will open and resume operations. Efforts to move the 600 vehicles and associated GM Heritage Archive, which contains over 8 million still photos, 250,000 videos, 1.5 million digital media files and over 1 million pieces of microfilms, will occur in phases.

“As General Motors transforms the future of the automobile, we also celebrate and commemorate our storied past and rich history with our fantastic GM Heritage Center,” said GM President Mark Reuss. “Placing it near our company’s birthplace only makes sense and, much like our investment in Factory One and in our current operations in the area, aligns perfectly with our strong commitment to Flint, where it all began for us.”
