It looks like the Golden Sahara’s journey back into the public eye is just about over now that the car has rolled through the Mecum Spring Classic auction in Indianapolis. As one of the stars of the auction, crowds swarmed the Golden Sahara as it was pushed towards the auction block. Selling as Lot S113, the car was following huge sales of a Ford GT and a collection of Indianapolis 500 edition Corvette pace cars, which means there was no shortage of funds in the audience.

Ultimately, the car hammered for $350,000, purchased by a telephone bidder. The price was high, but far from the Earth-shattering figures that were tossed around minutes before the car sold. The new owner? Larry Klairmont, the steward of a massive collection in Chicago. The hoard, called Klairmont Kollections, is open to the public and is stocked full of unique vehicles.

Talking to Klairmont after the auction, he wasn’t sure the plans for the Golden Sahara -- mostly because he needs to inspect it. That means the classic debate between preserve or restore is still happening, but should be decided soon after he takes delivery.

If Klairmont doesn’t decide to restore the car, it’ll likely find space in his collection sooner rather than later. That means a car that was hidden from the public for over 50 years will be seen by anyone willing to make the trek to Chicago and look around the museum.

Of course, if the car is restored it be a long, long time before it’s slotted into the collection.

Until then, you can still check out Klairmont Kollections to see the other cars on display. As Larry owns over 300 cars, there’s sure to be something that’ll tickle your fancy. Tickets are cheap, especially for Chicago prices, at only $22 for a daily admission pass. There are also annual admission packages available if you live close to the Chicago and want to spend more time in the museum.
