2022 NASCAR Next-Gen Mustang Revealed As Tech-Forward Racer: Video
We first caught a glimpse of the 2022 NASCAR next-gen Mustang last month on the track wearing heavy camo, followed by a leak earlier today that showed off the new racer in the flesh. Now, however, the long wait for the brand new, high-tech Ford Mustang stock car is over, as Ford has officially pulled the covers off its next-generation NASCAR racer.
The NASCAR next-gen Mustang will compete in the Cup Series starting next season, when it replaces the current car, in service since 2013. The new car has been in development for two years and is a ground-up redesign that’s more than just skin deep – Ford and NASCAR designed this race car for the future and equipped it to prepare for the arrival of hybrid and electric drivetrains, along with other technological advances.
However, as we’ve previously reported, the next-gen Mustang racer is also designed to look more like its production counterpart – in this case, the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500. The body takes on a wider stance than both that car and its predecessor, along with a smaller greenhouse area and new 18-inch wheels. Underneath, the pony car racer rides on a new independent rear suspension, with new 18-inch aluminum wheels at all four corners.
“A lot of work has been done behind the scenes to make sure this Next-Gen Mustang remains relevant to our customers,” said Mark Rushbrook, global director, Ford Performance Motorsports. “As the automotive industry continues to change, we’ll have the ability to keep up in the racing world without having to go through a complete overhaul or redesign of the car. This is something we’ve been waiting for and we’re glad the time has finally arrived.”
The 2022 next-gen NASCAR Mustang will make its racing debut at the 64th annual Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway on February 20th, 2022.
