Chevrolet, Ford and Toyota to Unveil Next Gen Racer in May

This camouflage comes off and organizational testing will begin this summer

NASCAR’s Next Gen platform is ready for its initial close up.

Chevrolet, Ford and Toyota will unveil their respective manufacturer specific bodies at 3 p.m. on May 5 in Charlotte, North Carolina. The exact location was not disclosed, and the event will only be open to select people due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The unveil will be streamed over the internet.

The Next Gen is a revolutionary racing platform with a six-speed sequential transmission, independent rear suspension, 18” aluminum wheels and wider, lower-profile tires with a single-lug assembly. The cars will continue to use the current generation engines until a hybrid-based power plant supplants it over the next decade.

Following a two-year testing process using a pair of prototypes, the first three manufacturer specific cars conducted a private group test like week at Martinsville Speedway in Virginia. The test was not open to the public, with the cars dressed in camouflage, and no images getting out from the session.

With the unveil will come additional information about the bodies, single parts suppliers and additional information.

The ‘P3’ has been the most commonly tested protype and it was on track Tuesday and Wednesday at Darlington Raceway with Tyler Reddick turning laps for Goodyear at the South Carolina speedway.

Teams have started to order the components needed to construct their own cars and organizational testing will begin this summer with the official debut coming in Speedweeks in advance of the Daytona 500.
