Here's How SEMA Plans to Hold Its Show Safely

It’ll be like visiting the grocery store ... with 150,000 other people.

 

The Specialty Equipment Market Association, better known as SEMA, is gonna need a swimming pool full of hand sanitizer, that’s for sure.

While so many events have been canceled or postponed in light of health concerns surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, the SEMA Show soldiers on, with plans moving full steam ahead for Nov. 3-6. Past SEMAs have crammed over 150,000 attendees into the Las Vegas Convention Center every November, and if there’s a way to socially distance while fighting elbow to beer belly while in line for a poster from Miss Allen Head Wrench 2021, it’s hard to imagine.

Well, here’s how, according to the world’s biggest aftermarket parts organization.

Close your flying eyeballs and try to picture these planned protocols at the show Nov. 3-6, some of which have already been tested in supermarkets, big box retailers and other essential businesses:

 

  • Social density concepts like directional traffic flow and distancing measures
  • Face masks
  • Reducing touch points in high-traffic areas like Registration or the New Products Showcase
  • Increasing frequencies of facility cleaning and adding a process for nightly sanitization
  • Encouraging early registration so credentials can be mailed in advance of the show
  • Developing an efficient health query protocol as showgoers arrive on campus
  • Streamlining food locations to create touchless and cashless transactions

 

It sounds like they are making a real good-faith effort to keep everyone safe and healthy, but have you ever been to the SEMA Show? How to keep 150,000 attendees from sneezing on each other or touching door bars or just breathing in those close quarters is going to be a major challenge. Previous security measures alone, where everyone had to walk through an airport-style scanner, resulted in long lines. Imagine implementing “health query protocols.” But by golly they’re going to do it!

“We are steadfast in our belief that our members and our industry will recover more quickly from the current climate by safely coming together to share ideas and look ahead to strategize for 2021 and beyond,” said Tom Gattuso, SEMA VP of events. “In some respects, it will be one of the hardest events we have produced in the Show’s 54-year history, but it will also be among the most gratifying.

 

 

“We are proactively calling on all our partners to pool our collective resources to establish best practices and deliver the highest levels of safety and security along with the business value SEMA is known for,” said Gattuso. “Even with the Show still months away, we are well into planning what it will look like when we all gather in Las Vegas.”

Well, maybe everybody wears scuba gear?

By Nov. 3, opening day for the show, things might be better. We wish them well and look forward to seeing some more great cars and parts.
