Illinois Railway Museum hold Vintage Transportation Extravaganza that has something for everyone.

Ever have two passions collide in such a fun and unexpected way, that everything after that was never the same?  This show was that much fun.  It was a little bit of everything, Hot Rods, Classic Cars, Muscle cars and all sorts of vintage trains.

This was the 29th Annual Illinois Railway Museum (IRM) Vintage Transportation Extravaganza.  It takes place in early August and is on the grounds of the Museum.  The IRM is the largest railroad museum in the country.  They are one of a handful that can operate Steam, Diesel and numerous electric trains at a single time.  The grounds cover several acres, and they use all of it.  Cars are scattered around numerous fields and open areas around the museum.  Fortunately, they have street cars that circle the property and allow fun and easy movements through the show.

The only real requirement is that the vehicle be pre-1999, that’s a pretty open field.  You could walk in one area and see a bunch of Studebakers or Buicks, hop the street car and you are in the Chevrolet area full of Chevelles, Camaros and even a wagon or two.

Getting through the gate, not only do you have the car show, but the museum grounds are completely open, allowing for viewing of the largest collection of vintage railroad equipment in the country.  Some on display, some being restored, all while there are trains operating all around you.  Which are free to ride with entry into the show.  Last year was the first time I attended, and I know that I won’t miss it again.
