Wilwood Announces Third-Gen Chevy Camaro, Pontiac Firebird Road Race Brakes

Building a race car with heaps of power is fun, but it’s all for naught if the brakes aren’t up to task. That’s where companies like Wilwood Engineering, Inc. step in. Based out of Camarillo, California, Wilwood has been making high-performance brake systems since 1977. Now, one of the company’s latest product is this bolt-in race solution for third-generation Chevy Camaro and Pontiac Firebird models (1982 through 1992 model years).

Getting the new Wilwood brake kit onto your third-gen Chevy Camaro or Pontiac Firebird is relatively easy, all thanks to the simple bolt-on installation. The kit is designed for use on vehicles using the OE suspension set-up.

“Changing rotors has never been easier, or faster, even while hot,” Wilwood says.

The calipers are made from forged aluminum, and come from Wilwood’s fixed mount ST (short track) series, with a Type-III hard-anodized finish for the calipers and four pistons per unit. The stoppers also get Wilwood’s Thermlock piston technology for reduced heat transfer during heavy use.

The four-pot calipers clamp down on Wilwood’s proprietary Spec37 GT 48 curved vane competition series alloy rotors. Customers can get the rotors in either a 12.19-inch diameter, or 13.06-inch diameter, whichever works best for their Chevy Camaro or Pontiac Firebird. The kit also comes with BP-30 race compound SmartPads.

Final details in the kit include stainless steel flexlines, mounting brackets, and the hardware needed to make it all work properly.

The new Wilwood brake kit is compatible with either the 1LE option or modified single piston caliper spindles. Installation eliminates the rotor bolts. The system uses a lug-drive snap-ring rotor-and-hat system.

What’s more, the rotors move independently from the hat, which eliminates thermal distortions over heat cycles.

“[The] rotor stays flatter and runs truer, creating smoother, vibration-free performance,” Wilwood says.

The new Wilwood kit conforms to SCCA A/S, NASA AI, AIX, and CMC spec rules. Pricing starts at $2,234.39.
