Description

You've got to appreciate the guys who go all-out on a custom car build, ignoring costs and chasing a dream. This 1968 Camaro convertible is such a car. Packed with so many custom items and delivering performance more akin to a new Z06 Corvette than a vintage F-body, it's a cost-no-object build from the pros at Littlefield Customs. Spectacular in every regard, from the paint, to the potent LS3 under the hood, to the trick all-independent suspension, this car has already won a ton of major awards, and is absolutely the fastest, nastiest, most beautifully built early Camaro anywhere, at any price.

The stunning two-tone charcoal gray and root beer brown paintjob has to be seen in person to be believed - literally, as there are also ghost stripes on there that are almost invisible in the photos. The body of this original Camaro was taken down to bare steel and rebuilt almost at the molecular level. New quarters were installed and fitted so well that the seams are all but invisible. Extra time was invested in getting this car to fit together extremely well, and the doors open and close more solidly than any new car I've experienced. The paint is two-stage urethane, of course, and the break between the colors is crisp and clean, with no camouflage needed, a testament to the skill of the painters. Obviously there's a lot of metallic and pearl in the paint, and the net effect is a car that shimmers in the sun and seems to change color as you walk around it. And the combination of the charcoal gray and root beer is innovative - you simply won't see another car like this anywhere, and people respond to it in a way that we haven't seen since we finished “Maximum Effect.”

All the original chrome and trim has been left intact, albeit fully restored to show condition. No painted bumpers, no deleted trim, and not even a cowl-induction hood, instead it's all the wonderful 1968 Camaro trim that makes these cars so timeless. You may have noticed that it wears Z/28 badges, and obviously there were no convertible Z/28s, but somehow they look right on the fenders. It also sports the Rally Sport covered headlights, and many people prefer the look of the '68 covers to the slotted '69s. The hood still carries the original velocity stack style trim, and out back there's a correct duck tail spoiler and a pair of billet tail lights the emulate the originals but with a high tech look.

No pro-touring car is complete without a state-of-the-art engine, and the LS3 based V8 under the hood is a perfect example. On the dyno, this engine cranked out 525 horsepower and 462 pounds of torque (the dyno sheets are included with the car), and delivers blistering performance now that it has found a home in this Camaro. But as stunning as the performance is, it pales in comparison to the craftsmanship that went into fitting it to the F-body engine bay. On top it features an extended engine cover that has been custom painted to match the body and covers the intake and coil packs. A custom-made twin snorkel air cleaner feeds it air from up front, while billet aluminum brackets and hood hinges dress up the mundane areas. The accessories and pulleys have been polished, as well as the custom-built aluminum radiator up front keeping it all cool. Ceramic-coated long-tube headers feed a 2.5-inch stainless exhaust by Magnaflow, which sounds absolutely spine-chilling on the road. The vintage Delco battery topper is a nice touch that somehow looks right at home among all the billet and polished aluminum, but it is actually the cover for the upgraded fuse panel.

And yet, as spectacular as the bodywork and engine are, the chassis is where most of this car's greatest modifications have been made. Up front, a modern C5 Corvette suspension has been grafted onto the Camaro's subframe, resulting in razor-sharp handling and stunning braking performance with the Z06-spec rotors and calipers. Out back, a 2003 Mustang Cobra independent rear suspension has been installed, a trick we haven't seen before but absolutely brilliant in execution. The Cobra IRS features 3.55 gears and 13.5-inch brakes, so the rear of the car is definitely doing its part to shred the corners. The transmission is a T56 6-speed manual, with a deep overdrive for easy highway cruising. A complete Air Ride system that features automatic leveling and infrared sensors has been installed at all four corners, so the car can be raised for climbing over steep driveways, and slammed in the weeds for high-speed performance. What's better, this car features near perfect 50.5 front/49.5 rear weight distribution, which is crucial to performance. Wheels are 18-inch billet hoops from Boyd Coddington, wearing 265/35/18 front and 285/35/18 rear Sumimoto performance radials. And wow, it sure is pretty under there!

The black leather interior is a combination of modern Corvette and vintage Camaro, just like the rest of the car. The heated front buckets are from a Corvette, and feature 6-way power adjustment. The rear bench has been recontoured and reupholstered to match, giving the car a very uniform look inside. The door panels, while originally vinyl, have been recently upgraded to leather to match the seats, and the workmanship is outstanding. The dash has been stuffed with digital gauges in place of the original analog pieces, although the cool auxiliary gauges on the center console have been retained and restored. And you just can't miss that too-cool-to-be-believed steering wheel with the flat bottom that was custom made just for this car. The center console houses a T-handle shifter for the 6-speed, as well as the power window switches. A little higher up, you'll find a completely custom entertainment/navigation system by Kenwood and Kicker, with an integrated Garmin GPS, as well as controls for the automatic climate control system. The car also features such modern features as keyless ignition and provisions for ABS brakes if the new owner chooses to go that route. Overhead, the top has been given a full interior headliner that fits beautifully and helps seal out noise, and it fits perfectly over the roll hoop behind the seats. In the fully upholstered trunk you'll find the storage tank and compressor for the suspension and the amplifier for the entertainment system.

This car is also nicely documented with a complete build book that brings photos of the build, manuals, brochures, and other documentation outlining the components that went into its construction. There are also a ton of awards that this car has already won, including Best of Show at the East Coast OC Nationals, Best in Class at the 2011 World of Wheels, First in Class at the 2010 Camaro Nationals, as well as Best of Show. Impressive.

RK Motors Charlotte has seen some pretty amazing hardware recently, and each time we proclaim that we've discovered the ultimate pro-touring machine. And each time we do that, another car comes along and raises the bar yet again. This Camaro is so full of innovative features and just flat-out astounding integration of old and new technology, that it seamlessly blends the old and new into a stunning supercar that only looks 43 years old. Beautifully finished and everything works as it should, which is remarkable given the amount of technology packed into it. With just 942 miles since it was completed, it's still fresh and ready to compete at the highest levels, or to drive if you need to experience its otherworldly performance. If you're an early Camaro fan and the stock stuff just doesn't do it for you, here's one that anyone can see is something special. Call now!
