Covered in correct Hemi Orange two-stage and equipped with an era-correct Six Pack system, this fully restored Superbird is a numbers-matching 440 car that was snatched up before it even graced our showroom!
The history of Chrysler's winged warriors is as storied as the cars themselves. On the stock car circuit, they were so dominant that they were outlawed before their program was fully developed. Because they were birthed in the age of “Win on Sunday, Sell on Monday” they languished on dealer lots. And today, roughly 40 years after their introduction, the cars are red-hot collectibles that serve as the centerpieces of many significant Mopar collections.
In terms of eyeball appeal, it's hard to beat the one car parade created by these classics. This 'bird is the beneficiary of a professional, frame-off restoration that's documented by several photo albums. The car's body was solid when work began, and it appears that only its decklid was replaced. Panel gaps are better than they ever were from Chrysler's hand-built assembly line. The big nose fits well, its doors close with precision; and naturally, that aforementioned two-stage is exemplary thanks to thorough wet-sanding and a high speed buffer.
Pop the car's hood and dig an original, 440 cubic inch V8 that's fitted with an era-correct Edelbrock intake, three 2-barrel carburetors and a familiar Six Pack air cleaner. That fully rebuilt engine was also cosmetically restored, and sports a roster of detail items like correct hoses, clamps, belts, and wires. Up front, an original 26-inch radiator keeps things cool while a recent red cap battery provides the juice. And overall, the big mill veils excellent performance in a show quality appearance.
Under the car, motivation is provided by a rebuilt A727 Torqueflite 3-speed, as originally equipped. Behind that transmission, a powder coated Chrysler 8.75 inch rear end spins 3.23 gears that are perfect for high-speed cruising. The body's floors have been professionally undercoated for long-term protection on the road. And everything rolls on fresh Rallye wheels and fat 255/60/15 BF Goodrich Radial T/As.
Inside, the driver's compartment is a fully restored cocoon that was provided by some of the top names in the restoration market. Basically, if you can touch it, it's new. The seats are correct black units with silver trim. The center console features fresh woodgraining on its top plates. And the Rim Blow steering wheel is fully detailed and ready to go.
Forget about the days of these cars sitting in showrooms and waiting for new owners. Today, they're some of the most popular, heavy-hitting collector pieces in the classic car market. And the fact that this Plymouth sold well before we could even post it to our website just reaffirms its rock-solid value!
