Frame Off Restored Chevelle Super Sport 396 V8 TH400
If you look up “muscle car” in the dictionary, there's a good chance you'll find a picture of a 1970 Chevelle beside it. They're one of America's best loved blends of intermediate proportions and plus-size engines. When we get one like this killer 1970 Super Sport, they don't stick around the showroom for long.
This A-body benefits from a frame-off restoration that elevated the car to better-than-new status. The classic lines are covered in a fresh coat of Cranberry Red accented by black Super Sport stripes. It's a strong color combination and one the Chevelle wears especially well. From the pointed grille and aggressive cowl hood to the 70-exclusive taillight panel, all the big pieces are in place for an impressive first impression. Details like new headlights and bezels, fresh glass, and well-preserved stainless continue the strong showing.
Under that cowl hood, a well-dressed 402ci V8 provides motivation. It's not the original engine but it is a proper GM-cast 854 block topped with factory heads, a polished intake and a Holley Street Avenger carb. There's plenty more to admire thanks to the chrome air cleaner assembly, valve covers, air conditioning compressor, water pump, radiator cover, and thermostat housing. The car starts and idles with ease, making itself heard through treated headers that connect to a chrome-tipped dual exhaust system tempered by Flowmaster mufflers.
Underneath the car, a clean undercarriage presents well thanks to fresh paint and new hardware all around. In the center, a TH400 3-speed automatic takes care of shifting duties, spinning power back to a 12-bolt rear with posi-traction and 3.73 gears. Around the drivetrain, the stock double A-arm front and four-bar rear incorporates new shocks all around and sway bars at both ends. Steering is power assisted as are the brakes which clamp down on discs up front and drums in the rear. At the corners, 17-inch American Racing wheels with 255/50R17 Fuzion ZRi tires complete the chassis and update the cars overall look.
Between the doors, the car stays true to factory styling with a black bucket seat interior. The seats are firm and supportive, showing little to no wear, while clean SS-branded door panels hang at either side. The center console makes room for a factory “horseshoe” shifter and plenty of storage space, topping fresh black carpet below. Instrumentation is stock, but the air conditioning system and upgraded AM/FM/cassette stereo system are both welcome upgrades. Out back, the trunk space is showroom fresh thanks to correct spatter paint, a new trunk mat, proper decals, and a full-size spare.
When we say these are one of America's favorite muscle cars, we aren't kidding. This slick '70 Super Sport sold before it even got through our marketing process. If you're in the market for an A-body of your own, stay tuned – we always have something great in store!
