Being a classic car fan, you've probably heard plenty about the automotive 'holy grails'. For Mopar guys, owning a Hemi 'Cuda is likened to a lifetime achievement award. And when it comes to the GM camp, incredible Corvettes, like this fully documented, fully restored Sting Ray, keep getting hotter and hotter. While classic Corvette culture may have started with big block cars, their small block siblings are beginning to command serious respect. And this awesome coupe, correct from its glossy Silver Blue paint all the way to its stout 327/Powerglide drivetrain, is a spectacular two-time recipient of NCRS Top Flight honors. This handsome Vette is a cool and refreshing departure from the flood of red and black fodder you see at all the major motor shows. With that in mind, the car was restored to be driven. And one look at its silky smooth profile confirms its rebirth was both thorough and professional. Wearing correct GM code 912 Silver Blue two-stage, this super slick C2 is the beneficiary of a complete, frame-off restoration that presents much nicer than factory-fresh originals. The car's body is very well done, featuring excellent fit that lays a solid foundation for proper panel alignment. And overall, this first class NCRS champ is exquisite in almost every way!
Not surprisingly, every piece of chrome on this classy award winner was restored to a 100% new appearance. Whether that means an excellent original piece was refinished to showroom-fresh condition, or new reproduction items were installed, the car's caretakers certainly did their homework to ensure this C2 is both accurate and impressive. At the front of this old school road king, bullet-style marker lights, a brilliant bumper and a red, white and black cross-flag emblem cage a body-width, stainless-trimmed grille. At the sides of that grille, simple heat extractors ride between traditional chrome door handles, ornate cross-flag emblems and correctly detailed rockers. Opposite those rockers, mirror-like wipers combine with a chrome bowtie mirror, fresh stainless trim and familiar B-pillar vents to frame correctly tinted glass. And behind that glass, optional, dual-color tail lights illuminate a chrome-trimmed fuel filler, a clean “Corvette Sting Ray” emblem, a chrome-trimmed tag bracket, two more bumpers and pristine stainless exhaust tips.
Tilt this Corvette's fiberglass hood and you'll find a correct L75 V8 that displaces precisely 327 cubic inches. Introduced as the ultimate option for Sting Ray owners who wanted to be just as quick in the corners as they were on the straightaways, Chevrolet's lightweight L75 utilizes a wide-bore block, a forged steel crank, forged pistons and a hot cam to turn stout 10.5 to 1 compression into a solid 300 horsepower. At the top of the spry block, a small, single-snorkel air cleaner funnels wind into a big 4-barrel carburetor that's juiced by clean stainless fuel lines. Below that carburetor, a bright orange intake perfectly complements stamped and painted valve covers. At the back of that intake, a chrome-capped ignition system shoots spark through metal-sleeved wires which lurk below correct cast iron exhaust manifolds. And at the front of those manifolds, a “Harrison” branded radiator circulates water through fresh GM hoses and authentic tower clamps. Whoever performed the restoration on this Corvette did an excellent job of creating an award winning, reliable engine bay which is every bit as detailed as the rest of the car. Bright Chevy Orange paint covers the block from its clean oil pan all the way to its chrome oil cap and, as always, looks great against GM's satin black bay. As expected, correct textures and decals are present and accounted for. And details like a rebuilt Frigidaire compressor, a reproduction Delco battery and a fresh AC fuel filter ensure this Chevy runs every bit as good as it looks.
Flip this small block Vette upside down and you'll find a solid chassis that's in good shape, and today, looks much as it did when it rolled off the showroom floor. At the center of the car, a correct 2-speed Powerglide utilizes a correct posi-traction rear end to spin civil 3.36 gears. At the ends of the car, a fully sorted double A-arm front and independent rear suspension is completely detailed down to its fresh shocks, correct springs and optional power steering system. Above that rebuilt suspension, original, never-hit floor tubs, which look factory fresh in every way, are bolted to a straight, satin black frame. At the corners of those floors, optional power drums mix good handling with quick stops. At the edges of those brakes, torque flows to the pavement through 15 inch turbine wheels which spin 205/70R15 BF Goodrich Momentum whitewalls around bright chrome spinners. And everything from this Corvette's correct chassis stamps to its fresh, factory replacement exhaust system is fully sorted and ready to roll!
Open this Chevy's tossable doors and you'll find a correct two-tone interior that was completely replaced during the car's extensive restoration. Seating comes courtesy of firm vinyl thrones that are anchored between correctly dated belts, optional power window switches and a small chrome shifter. From the driver's perch, stock gauges bleed onto their bordering panels in a march toward optional air conditioning and an optional AM/FM radio. Below that radio, like-new carpet is protected by carpeted and color-keyed floor mats. At the sides of that carpet, stainless-trimmed door panels hang small armrests below bright red accents. Above those panels, a bright white headliner rides as tight as it is clean. In front of the driver, a satin-spoked steering wheel spins around a brilliant cross-flag emblem. And behind the passengers, a fully carpeted storage compartment boasts enough room for two suitcases and a bag of detailing supplies.
