Much more impressive than when it originally rolled down St. Louis's storied assembly lines, this well-done Plymouth drop-top has been transformed into a take-no-prisoners showboat that consistently headlines cruise nights. You won't be staying under the radar with its professionally finished Dark Turquoise Metallic paintwork, which has been correctly applied over a very clean body. There are no signs of wholesale panel replacement, suggesting this has been a straight, rust-free shell its entire life. Not surprisingly, the car's fit and finish is almost good enough to turn reflections into reality. And overall, this classic is so slick that many unsuspecting bystanders will be fooled right into thinking it spent considerable time at the custom shop.

Taking a lesson in brand awareness from the likes of Ford, Chevrolet and Pontiac, Plymouth equipped their mighty GTX with a number of hot styling cues not offered by its plebian Belvedere siblings. At the front of this car's long Turquoise body, a stainless Satellite grille hangs a traditional red, white and blue centerpiece between a snazzy “440” hood ornament, a wide-set “PLYMOUTH” script, four halogen headlights and a pristine, show-chromed bumper. Behind that “440” ornament, GTX-exclusive hood scoops lead the eye to like-new glass that's framed by restored stainless trim, cleared by satin windshield wipers and capped by a white vinyl top. At the sides of those scoops, dent-free rocker trim combines with like-new fender trim to anchor traditional chrome door handles and spotless rearview mirrors between new “BELVEDERE GTX” emblems and an attractive 'pit stop' fuel filler. And at the back of the car's body, “PLYMOUTH” branded pot metal trunk trim aligns perfectly between clear factory taillights, a second show-chromed bumper and bright stainless exhaust tips.

Under the hood of this official looking Mopar you'll find a correct 440 cubic inch Super Commando V8 which creates 375 horsepower, produces 480 lb./ft. of torque and wears a familiar 2536430 casting number below an October (10) 20th (20) of 1966 (66) casting date. More popular than Chrysler's famed HEMI, and almost as feared, the Super Commando V8 was designed to be Plymouth's best combination of comfort, streetability and big block performance. At the top of this fully rebuilt RB, a big 4-barrel carburetor breathes through a correct dual snorkel air cleaner that's branded with fresh, reproduction decals. Below that carburetor, a spotless Turquoise block wears traditional chrome valve covers and professionally restored exhaust manifolds. In front of those manifolds, reproduction belts spin a big Mopar alternator above a correct fan and a fully rebuilt factory power steering pump. The hot engine's fires are lit by fresh plug wires, a reproduction coil and a familiar points distributor. And its cooling is provided by a correct 26 inch heavy duty radiator that's hooked to pliable hoses via old school squeeze clamps. Take a second to refocus your eyes on the clean engine bay and you'll find aesthetic pleasantries like a reproduction Mopar battery, a correct washer fluid tank, a fresh brake booster, a bright orange carburetor spring and a correct quality stamp. And the entire set up, from its fenders to its firewall, is coated in the same excellent code L Turquoise as the car's dynamic exterior panels.

Throw this awesome GTX on a lift and you'll find a solid undercarriage that appears, at some point, to have been at least mildly restored. Factory correct undercoating protects weather-free floorpans that, while straight, certainly aren't a stranger to black top. Behind the stalwart engine, a correct A727 Torqueflite 3-speed sends power through a pristine driveshaft to a familiar 8.75 inch rear end. At the front of the car, traditional torsion bars combine with factory power steering to make quick work of big bumps and tight curves. At the back of the car, fresh shocks augment traditional leaf springs in front of a leak-free stainless fuel tank. Stops come courtesy of heavy duty power drum brakes that are positioned at all four corners. Exhaust is handled by aluminized tubes which send spent gases into an H-pipe crossover, factory replacement mufflers and bright stainless tips. And the big block's power is put to the ground through a great combination of classic 15 inch Magnum 500 wheels and modern 235/60/15 Defender Sport SR redlines.

Open this Belvedere drop-top's slab-sided doors and you'll find one of the coolest interiors ever bolted behind a big block engine. Billed as the 'Gentleman's muscle car' and finished in correct P6W trim, it brings a real sense of class to a car with a solemn and brutish nature. In front of the driver, a rebuilt instrument cluster sits inside of a slick re-painted dash that's capped by a supple and pliable pad. Below that cluster, like-new accessory knobs sit beside a correct Plymouth Transaudio AM radio that's centered in great looking stainless trim. Below that radio, an optional console holds Plymouth's controversial, but equally cool, canted tachometer in front of a correct Inland shifter and what seems like a mile of chrome trim. Below that console, new black carpet is protected by “GTX” branded floor mats. And on top of that carpet, fully restored seats prop fresh covers between original belts and a sweet looking chrome-spoked steering wheel. Fresh white door panels carry stainless accents and chrome hardware to a tight white convertible cowl that hangs over a fully restored trunk. Inside that trunk, a like-new mat separates a correct bumper jack from a fifth full-size tire. And from its blinding stainless trim to its crystal clear courtesy lamps, this convertible's interior is a no-excuses, no holds barred tribute to classic American motoring.

The sale of this classic Plymouth includes a small stack of restoration receipts and the Chrysler Historical Foundation document outlined above.

This first class GTX is a super cool cruiser that's easy to imagine as the focal point of a cross-country road trip. With its burly V8, gorgeous interior and classic styling, it represents everything great about the golden age of Detroit. If you're looking for a top-notch classic that'll draw a crowd wherever it goes, your search is over!
