Some cars are just so good, so authentic, so well-finished that these descriptions practically write themselves. Chevelles are immensely popular cars, and none so much as those packing big block V8s and strong pedigrees. If you’re a Chevy fan, you know how hard it is to prove that a Chevelle is a real SS, and what a challenge it can be do document the numbers. In the case of this gorgeous 100% matching numbers 1969 Chevelle SS396, there are no questions and no gray areas. Every number on the car matches up the way it should, and we have photos and paperwork to back up the claims it makes. Beautifully restored to show condition, by the time you’re done reading this, you’ll be convinced that this car is truly the real deal.

The first thing you’ll want to do is check the trim tag, which confirms that this is a real LeMans Blue Chevelle with Parchment interior.

This car received a frame-off rotisserie restoration that was completed in 2008, and remains in top show condition today. Stripped to bare metal, the original steel was restored and anything that wasn’t absolutely laser straight was repaired or replaced. Today it’s impossible to find any signs of repairs or patches, and I suspect that this was an incredibly straight car to begin with. Gaps are excellent, and the body lines flow from panel to panel in an uninterrupted curve. The paint is 2-stage PPG urethane that has been wet sanded and buffed to remove any defects and the end result is a stunning, vivid, LeMans Blue Chevelle that will knock people’s socks off. Correct white stripes have been installed and only emphasize how incredibly straight this car really is.

As with the body restoration, the chrome and trim were all removed and fully restored to better-than-new condition. Triple-plated chrome bumpers are straight and ding-free, and no production chrome in 1969 ever looked this good. All the stainless was buffed until it matched the bumpers. The glass is excellent all around, including the original rear window, which looks surprisingly good for being 42 years old. The windshield is a new replacement. Emblems and lenses have all been restored or replaced by reproduction items that match the originals exactly.

The engine is fully rebuilt and highly detailed, and the numbers on it have been exhaustively researched. Every component is correctly date-coded, and the block still carries its original stamped numbers, which match the VIN. Here’s the breakdown on the numbers:

Engine pad: 367332 (matches the VIN this is located on the passenger side head front on engine, on the stamping pad. Vehicle # 1 3 6 7 9 B 3 6 7 3 3 2. The engine was built on 03/27/69, with the vehicle built on 1st week of April 1969.

The intake manifold is casting #3931067, which is correct for an L78 396, and carries a casting date of C 21 9, which is March 21, 1969, 6 days before the engine was assembled. Even the exhaust manifolds are believed to be the original pieces for this car, with casting dates that are within a day of each other in late January, 1969. The carburetor is a Rochester Quadrajet #7029207, which is correct for the 350 horsepower 396 engines.

The quality is evident the first time you open the hood. From the chrome air cleaner and valve covers (which are correct for an L78 Chevelle SS), to the Chevy orange paint on the block and heads to the ceramic-coated exhaust manifolds, this engine compartment pops. From the littlest details like the hose clamps, to the big things like the finish on the power brake booster and the reproduction Delco battery, this is an exacting restoration of a very strong original car. The satin black inner fenders provide the perfect canvas for this highly detailed engine bay, and the variety of factory finishes and details will have true Chevy enthusiasts pouring over it for hours.

This car also carries its original Muncie M22 4-speed manual. All the numbers have been double-checked, and main case casting number 3925660 matches all documented M22 gearboxes. The tailshaft, casting number 3857584 is correct for this transmission as well. Fully rebuilt, it slips through the gears easily and is definitely up to the challenge of harnessing the big block’s power. A rugged 12-bolt rear is the final link in the power train. While it packs a later pumpkin with 3.55 gears, the housing is dated 3/19, which is the correct window of production for this car’s April build date, so it’s likely that the housing is original to this car.

The entire suspension has been rebuilt and features correct components including shocks and sway bars. SS models got standard power front disc brakes, which featured simpler single-piston calipers in 1969. The floors have been correctly finished in satin black with just a hint of LeMans Blue overspray, just as the factory would have done it. A reproduction chambered exhaust system sounds predatory, and terminates in correct polished oval tips. 14-inch SS wheels carry modern 215/70/14 Goodyear Eagle ST white-letter tires.

LeMans Blue and Parchment go together like few other color combinations, and it works extremely well on Chevelles in particular. The interiors were not flashy and over-dressed, but rather functional, elegant, and stylish and are exactly right for the performance cars in which they live. The black and white combination just never goes out of style. This driver’s compartment has been expertly restored to a very high standard, with new materials used throughout. The bucket seats feature fresh foam under the new cushions, there are new door panels on the doors, and overhead a new headliner is bright and clean. Black carpets and dashboard keep the white from being blinding, and are easier to clean. The gauges appear to have been restored along with everything else, although two auxiliary gauges for oil pressure and temperature have been added below the dash. The center console is in great condition, and the shifter is topped by a white Hurst cue ball. The radio has been upgraded to a more modern AM/FM/cassette unit, but the original AM radio is included with the car and can be easily retrofitted. The finishing touch is a new set of black SS396-logo floor mats. In back, the trunk is fully restored with spatter finish paint, a new trunk mat, and a full-sized spare with restored jack assembly.

Not many cars come to us as exhaustively documented as this one. Every number on the car has an accompanying photograph proving that it’s correct, and I’ve only scratched the surface on the decoding that is included with this car. The bottom line is that almost every single component used on this car is either original, or date-code correct. There’s enough evidence here to be able to prove without a doubt that this is a real SS, and not a clone or re-creation built from an old Malibu. And the restoration really is spectacular. Someone spent a great deal of time and money making this car correct. And you’d better be glad that most clubs don’t deduct points for over-restoration, because this one is so far over the top nice that you really need to see it in person to truly appreciate it. Given all that, the price on this one is a screaming bargain, and with a pedigree like this one has, its value can only go up from here. Call now!
