Description

If you're a fan of style, speed and comfort, you simply can't go wrong with Pontiac's storied GTO. The goat practically defined the golden age of Detroit, and by the time its first production run was over, it had become the best-selling muscle car of all time. Not surprisingly, demand for these cornerstone classics continues to be strong. In 2013 alone, we've shipped seven awesome GTOs to seven very satisfied owners across the globe. This stunning 1964 GTO is very likely to be number eight. The subject of a well documented frame-off restoration, the car was awarded Concours Gold by the GTO Association of America. The car is factory fresh in every imaginable way and even carries a 389 V8 between the fenders. If you're looking for an impressive classic that'll roll straight out of the showroom and onto the red carpet, here's your chance to grab a tiger by the tail!

According to PHS documentation, the car originally shipped with the following options:

• Grand Turismo Omologato package
• Muncie M21 4-speed transmission
• 3 2-barrel carburetors
• Push-button radio
• Heavy duty radiator
• Back-up lamps
• Verbra-Phonic rear speaker
• Soft-Ray glass
• Heavy duty brakes
• Safe-T-Track differential with 3.90 gears

Grand Total: $3,509.53 (including the $49 destination charge)

If you knew then, right? Applying the “sleeper” term to anything with GTO badges is questionable at best but this car certainly does a good job of playing down its capabilities. According to the trim tag, the car rolled off the assembly line during the second week of March 1964 dressed in Nocturne Blue. That color was later swapped for a clean coat of white that underscores the car's unassuming demeanor. If that raised some red flags about the body work below, rest assured it's first rate all around. The car was restored in 2002 and still shows with absolute authority. Those long body lines are all laser straight and the panel gaps are miles ahead of anything that left assembly plants of the early 1960s.

Pontiac did a great job of creating low-key details that didn't weigh down the GTO's simple design. The front of the car is dominated by trademark, stainless-trimmed grilles that are anchored between T3 headlights, a pristine, satin-finish arrowhead and a body-width chrome bumper. Inside those grilles, a prominent “G T O” emblem hints at the performance bolted beneath a scooped hood. At the sides, expressive 'coke bottle' fenders hang dent-free wheel well trim and arrow-straight rocker moldings around correct chrome door handles. On the outsides of those fenders, bright red GTO crests combine with black “G T O” quarter scripts, creating visual excitement to match the car's visceral thrill. Above those crests, like-new glass combines with well-maintained stainless, straight chrome drip rails and a correct driver's mirror to highlight the car's awesome pillar-less profile. And behind that glass, a second body-width bumper hangs integrated reverse lamps below a finned valence, an ominous “G T O” badge, a second satin-finish arrowhead and appropriately centered “PONTIAC” lettering that lets the competition know exactly who outran them.

While the Tri-Power 389 was the top GTO engine option for 1964, the 389 has been pumped up to 400 ci, with a set of “48” D-port heads which sit beneath chrome valve covers on either side of a factory intake manifold. Three Rochester two-barrel carburetors topped off with chrome air cleaners, stainless fuel lines, and a bright yellow return spring round out the package. As a performance-focused car, items like air conditioning and power steering aren't in this equation. The accessory drive focuses its efforts on spinning an open face alternator and fan opposite a Harrison-style radiator. Spent gases are freed through correct cast iron exhaust manifolds that flow into a stainless dual exhaust system that's updated with an X-pipe and Dynomax mufflers. Around the centerpiece, details like the tagged Delco battery, correct decals, replicated inspection marks, and clean satin black inner fender wells add up to an award-winning presentation.

Based on a quick 'lift and look', this Pontiac's clean undercarriage appears to have logged very few miles since its complete restoration. The car's solid, satin black floor and rust free frame are absolutely spotless and present a fresh factory sheen. In the center, the original Muncie M21 4-speed manual remains as strong as ever thanks to a 2002 rebuild. From there, power spins down the driveshaft and back to a 10-bolt Safe-T-Track rear with 3.90 gears. The suspension has been rebuilt and displays a level of detail certainly worthy of the car's Concours Gold status. A standard double A-arm independent front suspension is aided by a sway bar while the rear is supported by a factory 4-bar with boxed lower control arms. Suspension remains direct thanks to the lack of power steering while heavy-duty drum brakes are surprisingly effective at reining in the 389. At the corners, 14-inch steel wheels are topped with correct wheel covers and Mastercraft 215/70R14 tires for a great vintage look.

Open this coupe's nicely finished doors and you'll find a restored and correct GM code 215 Blue vinyl interior that's simple yet sporty. Front and center is firm bucket seats which feature bright chrome trim and cool pleated covers. The engine's vitals are displayed by an attractive gauge cluster which integrates round-faced dials and a correct push-button radio into a sporty dash that's reminiscent of European sports cars of the day. On the floors, like-new carpet anchors a chrome shifter inside a stainless-trimmed console and Pontiac-branded floor mats. At the sides of the car, fresh blue door panels feature new chrome handles and fresh stainless trim that parallels bright red GTO crests. In front of the driver, a chrome-trimmed steering wheel spins a classy horn ring around a blue, Pontiac-branded horn button. Finally, behind the rear bench, a spotless trunk sandwiches a correct jack and a full-size spare tire between a new mat and a correct decklid decal.

The sale of this Pontiac includes a significant stack of paperwork to fill you in on all the smaller details. Things get started with PHS documentation that cover pretty much anything you'd like to know about the car when it was originally delivered. For more up to date information, a binder full of restoration photos works alongside a huge pile of receipts to tell the full story. There's also an original Owner Protection Plan booklet thrown in for good measure.

This awesome 1964 GTO is an award-winning muscle car that features an ideal blend of performance and style. Thanks to its upgraded drivetrain and quality restoration, it'll be an absolute pleasure to drive and show for years to come. If you've been patiently waiting for the opportunity to pick up an excellent example of the ORIGINAL muscle car, here's your chance!
