With its wind-swept design and classic good looks, Ford's DeLuxe series has always been a rare and highly desirable line of cars. Not surprisingly, gearheads, chop shops and 70 years' worth of dedicated fans have elevated it to one of hot rodding's greatest cultural icons. And this awesome coupe, which began life as a real deal Ford 5-window, has, with the help of a thorough, frame-off restoration, been transformed into one super slick street rod. The car's build began with a complete tear down of its rock-solid fuselage. Once that fuselage's sinuous panels were massaged to perfection, a glossy Burgundy Metallic basecoat was married to a thick clearcoat shell. And today, this sizzling classic is a fully sorted boulevard king that looks better than pretty much every car at any show its owner chooses to attend!
There really isn't much you can do to make a 30s-era Ford more attractive. The car's streamlined styling was a home-run when originally introduced; and today, it's a stunning example of some of the strongest elements of the highly regarded Art Deco movement. At the front of this super cool coupe, a heart-shaped grille, which serves as the focal point of the car's classy façade, flows past traditional 'tear drop' headlights into a prominent, pointed chin. At the sides of that chin, sculpted fenders rake past body-matched heat extractors and chrome “V8” emblems to parallel a domed, ornament-secured hood. Behind that hood, painted running boards frame a mostly shaved profile that's accented by a traditional chrome mirror. Beside that mirror, a small, stainless wiper clears a split windshield that leads six pieces of smoked greenhouse glass. And behind that glass, a second pair of sculpted fenders hangs a shaved decklid above frenched tail lights and a frenched tag bracket.
Hoist this coupe's snug fitting hood and you'll find a 460 cubic inch Ford V8 that's been bored .030 over, professionally rebuilt and fully detailed for show. Straight from the bench, this blue oval big block utilizes a high quality Competition camshaft to mix killer horsepower with unmatched throttle response. At the top of the jet-black mill, air flows from a polished cleaner, which is fitted with a re-usable filter element, into a coated Quick Fuel carburetor that's hooked to a coated Edelbrock fuel pump via braided and polished lines. A resulting air/fuel mixture makes its way from a Weiand Stealth intake to factory Ford heads that hide high quality roller rockers under a slick pair of Ford Racing valve covers. When those heads flood the engine's cylinder banks, a modern Mallory distributor sequences fire through loomed Mallory Pro Sidewinders, while spent gases are jettisoned through painted fender headers. The big engine's cooling is provided by a deep aluminum radiator that's seated between a billet thermostat housing, an aluminum water pump and a big, electric pusher fan. And overall, the car's clean, body-matched engine compartment is exceptionally well done, featuring accessories like chrome hood hardware, trick dipsticks a “V8” branded radiator cap and a high quality Lokar throttle linkage.
Throw this classy club coupe on a lift and you'll find a completely custom chassis that features a roster of choice upgrades. Behind the stout 460, a Total Cost Involved C6 spins a narrowed Ford 9-inch via a fresh Custom Clutch driveshaft. At the front of that proven drivetrain, a custom, Mustang II-style suspension combines with big coil springs and manual rack and pinion steering to keep the big engine stable at high speeds. At the back of the car, an adjustable 4-link suspension utilizes a beefy Panhard bar and adjustable QA1 coil-overs to maximize traction. Braking is handled by manual, GM-style discs that occupy every corner. Spent gases travel through the aforementioned headers to large-diameter pipes, small, welded mufflers and polished, side-exit tips. Power flows to the pavement through slick Centerline wheels that twist 26x6.00R15 Mickey Thompson Sportsmans in front 31x18.00R15 Mickey Thompson Sportsmans. And the car's clean, painted floors are dotted with details like full wheels tubs, a small transmission cooler and a familiar brake proportioning valve.
Open this classic Ford's doors and you'll find a tasteful custom interior that combines the car's spectacular Maroon paint with supple Mercedes seats. The firm and modern thrones, three all total, are supportive, feel soft enough to take a nap on, and feature custom “V8” center buttons. In front of those seats, a body-matched dash frames classy Dolphin gauges above a modern JVC CD player. Below that dash, a custom, leather-wrapped consoles props a long B&M shifter in front of small power window switches. Below that console, high quality carpet anchors stylish black mats below billet foot pedals. At the edge of that carpet, custom side panels hang small armrests between big Pioneer kick speakers and bigger Alpine quarter speakers. Above those panels, a tight leather headliner frames an oval rearview mirror. In front of the driver, a polished and half-wrapped steering wheel spins around a polished steering column. And behind the passengers, a fully upholstered trunk hides a large fuel tank behind an Optima gel cell battery.
