Description

With prices of documented collector cars locked in a seemingly endless climb, many enthusiasts are beginning to rethink the old purists adage of 'original is always better'. And smart hobbyists who like actually driving their vintage hardware are beginning to buy slick, fully-sorted weekend cruisers like this 1969 Mustang Mach 1. After all, these classics were built to be seen and enjoyed on the open road, not garaged and dusted with an air compressor. And with a fire-breathing 408 that's centered in a fully sorted chassis and one of the most stylish bodies ever created, this slick black Mustang will have you smiling and waving all day long! Looking for an awesome road warrior that's as livable as it is lust worthy? With this awesome Mach 1, you won't even give the word “original” a second thought!

With most muscle cars, there's usually a single element that catches your eye long before anything else. But with this Mustang, EVERY piece works together to create a virtual symphony of automobilia. With a solid fastback body that's been completely massaged and reworked, this is the kind of car that would turn heads in primer; and what better way to ensure sore neck muscles than covering it in sinister Raven Black paint? That paint coats fit and finish that puts factory-original cars to shame. That fit and finish is augmented by a slick combination of satin surfaces and reflective decals which recreate traditional Mach 1 markings. And to ensure this pony stands out from the herd, everything was buffed to a show-stopping shine!

For 1967, Ford rolled out a bigger, more muscular pony car, and the 1968 and 69 model years saw that design subtly refined. The front end was cleaned up thanks to a deletion of horizontal grille bars and a redesigned Mustang emblem. That brightwork was replaced with a single band of trim surrounding the grille opening which, on this car, also houses driving lights. Above that grille, a factory hood features stainless lanyards and a small, silver-detailed scoop, in the absence of previous years' “FORD” lettering. Along the car's profile, clean Mach 1 stripes parallel dent-free stainless rocker trim and small marker lights. At the doors, body-matched sport mirrors complement traditional quarter scoops and highly detailed B-pillar emblems. Below the roofline, show-quality stainless and chrome edge flaw-free glasswork and matte-finished window louvers. And when you follow the fastback rearward, a large spoiler dumps into triple-segment taillights, a mustang-branded fuel filler and ”MUSTANG” “mach 1” scripts that are affixed opposite quad-outlet exhaust tips.

Hoist this coupe's snug fitting hood and you'll find a fully detailed 408 cubic inch Ford V8 that was professionally assembled by Allied Motors of St. Charles, Missouri. Straight from the bench this balanced block utilizes a Clevite mains, ARP bolts, I-beam connecting rods and a custom cam to create a killer 475 horsepower and unmatched throttle response. At the top of the Ford Blue mill, air flows through a polished a blue-detailed cleaner that's perched above a coated Holley carburetor and a series of fresh stainless fuel lines. A resulting air/fuel mixture makes its way from an Edelbrock Performer RPM intake to Edelbrock Victor Jr. heads that hide custom pushrods and high quality roller rockers under a slick pair of Ford Racing valve covers. When those heads flood the engine's cylinder banks, a traditional points distributor sequences fire through loomed Accel Hi Temp Super Stock wires while spent gases are jettisoned through coated, shorty headers. The big engine's cooling is provided by a factory radiator that's fitted with reproduction Autolite hoses and era-correct screw clamps. Charging comes courtesy of a tagged Autolite Sta-Ful that's wired to a bright Autolite voltage regulator. And overall the car's clean, satin black engine compartment is exceptionally well done, featuring accessories like correct decals, a Melling high volume oil pump, a braided linkage cover and vintage AC components.

At the bottom of this Mustang, a freshly restored undercarriage houses rock-solid floors that are bolted to lots of factory-correct components. Nice enough to show but still fully drivable, this is the perfect compromise for enthusiasts who like to display their car and still enjoy an occasional back road jaunt. Behind the snarling 408, a Lentech AOD 4-speed, which wears a polished Ford Racing pan, sends power to a correct rear end that's equipped with big 3.70 gears and Moser 31-spline axles. The car's suspension remains in its original configuration with the exception of big block towers up front and staggered shocks out back. While Mustangs were far from heavy, this coupe's steering effort is even lighter thanks to factory power assist. Braking is equally good with power front disc and rear drums brining momentum to a hurried halt. Spent gases race from the aforementioned headers into polished, large-diameter pipes that bend around an x-shaped crossover and polished Magnaflow mufflers. All of the chassis' parts are clean and fully painted, lending the restoration a fresh, barely driven appearance. And at the corners of the floor, snazzy 'styled steel' wheels spin 245/60R15 BF Goodrich Radial T/As in front of 255/60R15 BF Goodrich Radial T/As.

Inside this Ford, a comfortable black interior should make any Mustang fan feel right at home. All the soft parts from the carpet to the headliner look new, and the hi-back bucket seats provide plenty of support for spirited driving. From the captain's chair, a familiar Mustang dash features plenty of black vinyl and tasteful wood applique. A nice set of factory gauges keep tabs on fuel level, speed, revs and temperature while a Rim Blow steering wheel connects the driver to the road. In the center of the cockpit, a correct AM/FM radio hangs over an original-looking console that frames an ornate chrome shifter behind Ford Racing accessory gauges. At the sides of the cabin, crack-free door panels feature an attractive mix of stainless and wood applique. And behind the passengers, a restored trunk seals a fresh mat and space saver spare tire beneath appropriate decklid decals.

This Raven Black pony's sale includes the Deluxe Marti AutoWorks report outlined above, a 2010 appraisal, a giant pile of restoration receipts, a few component manuals and specs and prices for its killer Ford engine.

There's simply nothing like keying up a legendary muscle car. The sound, the feeling of the idle, and the relentless surge of torque as you power through the gears. It's very rare to find a well-executed restoration which carries an asking price of roughly half its original build cost, but this Mustang is exactly that. And if you're looking for a highly desirable classic that'll provide years of weekend fun, and rack up more than its fair share of fans in the process, this is your kind of car!
