Description

Quick quiz: which 1970 Chevelle has the lowest production numbers? If you guessed the LS6, you'd be wrong. In fact, the rarest 1970 Chevelle is actually the LS5 model, with only 4298 being built (versus 4475 LS6 Chevelles). With that in mind, RK Motors Charlotte is proud to present this stunning Tuxedo Black, matching numbers, LS5/4-speed Chevelle.

Fully restored to show condition by the RKM Performance Center, it is documented with not one, but two General Motors Broadcast Sheets and a stack of restoration receipts. If you've been looking for the ultimate 1970 big block SS, you may have just found it. Perhaps the most desirable color, code 19 Tuxedo Black does wonders for the Chevelle’s muscular shape. Arguably the most popular year for Chevelles, 1970 featured dual headlights, curvaceous quarters, and a tidy greenhouse that almost gives it a fastback appearance. The paint and bodywork on this particular Chevelle is simply spectacular. Tuxedo Black is this cars original color, and before a drop of urethane paint was sprayed, every panel was sanded and adjusted until it was flat and straight. Only then was the inky black paint applied. A cowl induction hood with hood pins was added during the restoration, and covered with white SS stripes that extend to the deck lid as well. Beautifully finished and buffed, there really is nothing like a black car if you want to really show off your bodywork skills.

Open that fresh cowl induction hood and you'll find this cars original LS5 big block V8. During the rebuild, extra care was taken to preserve the original stampings on the deck surface to verify this cars matching-numbers status. Originally rated at 360 horsepower and 500 pounds of torque, the LS5 was no slouch in 1970. Today, with the benefit of modern machining tolerances, careful assembly, and a little bit of science, the engine belts out 427 horsepower and 525 pounds of torque on the dyno (the dyno sheets are included with the sale of the car). Of course, as an RKM Performance Center restoration, it was also detailed to show standards. Once the engine was fully assembled, it was painted with traditional Chevy Orange paint and topped with correct chrome valve covers. With the addition of the cowl induction hood, a correct cowl induction air cleaner was procured, restored and installed on top of the big 4-barrel carburetor. Correct hoses and clamps were used throughout, the wiring is all-new, and all the proper decals were installed as new. Looking at the engine, you'd be hard-pressed to find any evidence of having been driven even the paint around the exhaust ports is bright and shiny, with no signs of heat damage.

Underneath, it's every bit as nice. The original (and very rare) M22 Muncie rock-crusher heavy duty 4-speed transmission has been rebuilt and bolted back up to the engine, while out back, the original 12-bolt houses 3.31 gears on a Positraction unit for great street performance. You'll also note that the vehicles identification number is clearly stamped in the rear of the frame on the driver's side, proving that this is not a rebody or a clone. Beautifully detailed for show, the floors are satin black as original, the suspension and power disc brakes have been rebuilt, and there are new, correct shocks at all four corners (spiral shocks out back). Appropriate assembly markings on the differential have been duplicated, and the balancing stripes on the driveshaft have been faithfully reproduced. A correct reproduction exhaust system is in place, and is complete down to the resonators and chrome tips out back. A reproduction gas tank feeds fresh fuel lines, the brake cables are new, and, well, it's pretty much all-new under there. Correct SS wheels carry reproduction Firestone Wide Oval bias-ply tires.

Inside, the black bench seat interior has been restored to the same standards as the rest of the car. According to the build sheet, this is a real black-on-black car, and with that in mind, RK Motors endeavored to make it as accurate as possible. That's the original dashboard, not a retrofitted Monte Carlo dash or one cribbed from a wreck. The seats feature fresh foam and new seat covers, new carpets on the floors and a new headliner overhead. The door panels were replaced, and all the hardware that wasn't up to show standards was either restored or replaced. A Hurst shifter with cue ball knob tops the Muncie, and feels great in your hands, encouraging you to bang through the gears. The original steering wheel was restored, and the AM radio works properly. Authentic cards, tags and decals have been used throughout the interior to give you that “just delivered” new car feeling from your 40-year-old Chevelle. The trunk features a new mat and correct spatter finish paint, as well as a full-sized spare with jack.

With so many clones running around, and with no real way of determining a real SS aside from several clues in the cars construction, documentation is critically important on cars like this. The investment-grade Chevelles feature documentation proving their status as real SS models. This particular Chevelle includes not one, but two build sheets verifying its status as a real LS5 big block SS. We've had quite a few people try to pass off clones as real cars (we can always spot the fakes), so when a real one shows up, we take notice. All the numbers check out (we have photos of every relevant digit), the paperwork is in order, and there are no questions on the authenticity of this car. We also have the original owner's manual and jacket with the selling dealers name and address stamped on it. Finally, there's that dyno sheet I mentioned, verifying the horsepower and torque of the rebuilt, numbers-matching LS5 under the hood.

This one's going to be awfully hard to top, Chevy fans. A 100% matching numbers LS5 with a 4-speed, in Tuxedo Black with a black interior, fully documented with GM Broadcast Sheets. The term "investment grade" was invented for cars like this. When you see the auctions on TV, this is the kind of car they're talking about when they mention provenance. Add in a top-flight restoration by the RKM Performance Center that has resulted in a Chevelle that is competitive on any show field in the world, and you have an awful lot of car for your money. At the asking price, you're getting the restoration at cost and the car for free. Stunning, fast, with no questions, THIS is the Chevelle to own if you're a serious Chevy collector looking for that missing piece. Call today!
