Description

Who can forget the 2000 remake of “Gone in 60 Seconds”? Chock-full of Hollywood A-listers, it's a fast paced, high octane classic that twists and turns through two hours of adrenaline-fueled action. And the first time the star of the movie, a 1967 Mustang GT500 known as Eleanor, pulled a full throttle 360 and kicked off one of the most epic chase scenes in history, every gearhead on the planet had a new favorite car! Today, the hobby is full of Eleanor replicas. That means every red-blooded 'car expert' makes it their passion to analyze details and lecture owners about their doppelgangers doing the original car justice. That love it or hate it polarity ultimately reflects itself in prices. Sloppy builds get relegated to the cost of their collective parts while well-done cars, like this 428-powered pro-tourer, find themselves at big venues bringing big money. At RK Motors Charlotte, we believe the only thing cooler than a car that runs well is a car that turns heads. And this red-hot Mustang smokes vintage metal at the cruise in AND the race track!

Designed by famed Hot Rod illustrator Steve Stanford, built by celebrity car builder Chip Foose and listed by Hot Rod Magazine as one of most influential vehicles in the history of hot rodding, the original Eleanor was actually 13 different cars uniquely equipped for different shots throughout the movie. And while most commercial reproductions take liberty with small details that separate Hollywood fantasy from backyard reality, well-executed builds, like this fully sorted coupe, are case studies in authenticity. The car's construction began with a trip to Cinema Vehicle Services, the company that produced exterior pieces for the actual movie rigs. Once a complete, limited edition body kit was secured, a frame-off, rotisserie restoration saw the addition of new front fenders. With that restoration solid, a smooth coat of correct Pepper Gray Metallic was detailed with correct Black Metallic stripes, sealed in durable clearcoat and buffed to a spectacular shine. And today, this top notch Eleanor is a fitting and impressive tribute to one of the most iconic muscle cars of all time!

Since most classic car enthusiasts credit Carroll Shelby with introducing some of the coolest and most aggressive Mustangs ever created, it's only natural that Eleanor's terminal form mirrors his stellar design. At the car's leading edge, a billet, Shelby-style grille hangs an offset “SHELBY GT500” emblem between chrome-trimmed headlights, a Shelby R valence and six PIAA driving lamps. At the top of that grille, an aggressive fiberglass hood aligns twist-style pins with clear glass, straight trim and Shelby-style quarter scoops. At the sides of that hood, a striped and Cobra Jet-branded profile highlights traditional door handles, chrome, bullet-style mirrors, subtle cove scoops and a polished Monza fuel cap. And at the back of that profile, a sculpted decklid hangs prominent “SHELBY” lettering between like-new tail lights, a pristine Cobra emblem, Shelby-style fender extensions and a straight chrome bumper.

Pop the car's lightweight hood and you'll find a 428 cubic inch big block V8 that gives new meaning to the words “Go Baby, Go”! Long regarded as one of the meanest mills ever created, Ford's fabled Super Cobra Jet utilized revised heads, heavy duty Le Mans connecting rods and a nodular iron crankshaft to ensure Shelby-branded Mustangs remained the kings of stoplight muscle. At the top of the Ford Blue block, a “COBRA” branded air cleaner funnels fresh wind into a big aluminum intake via a coated Demon carburetor. At the sides of that carburetor, finned “COBRA LE MANS” valve covers hang over ceramic coated Tri-Y headers. In front of those headers, a traditional points distributor sequences spark through beefy MSD Street Fire plug wires. And in front of those wires, a proven Edelbrock water pump circulates coolant through reproduction hoses and era-correct tower clamps. Aesthetically, the restored engine bay appears very close to original, featuring an even coat of Satin Black paint. And everything, from the motor's chrome dipstick and Red pressure gauge to the bay's Ford washer bag and Global West brace bars, is fully sorted and ready to go.

Take one look under this Mustang and you'll find exceptionally clean floors that were completely massaged during the car's extensive restoration. Behind the brutal 428, a Tremec 3650 5-speed, equipped with a steel scatter shield, spins a familiar Ford 9-inch around impressive, 3.50 gears. In front of that Tremec, a traditional wishbone suspension sandwiches modern coil-over-shocks between tubular Global West control arms. Behind those gears, correct leaf springs hang fresh KYB Gas-A-Just shocks between CalTracs-style traction bars. Stops come courtesy of 4-wheel discs brakes, which utilize two SSBC calipers to clamp two slotted rotors. Torched dinosaurs float through a large H-pipe crossover to welded chamber mufflers and rowdy, side-exit pipes. And power meets the pavement through 17-inch Eleanor wheels, which spin 245/45ZR17 Goodyear Eagles around bright chrome spinners.

Open this head-turner's doors and you'll find a fully restored cockpit that twists black carpet, black vinyl and bright stainless trim into an exceptionally attractive driving environment. The car's red-piped and Shelby-branded seats wear fresh, pleated covers between upgraded, 2-piece lap belts. In front of those seats, a striking dual-cowl dash hangs silver-faced Carroll Shelby gauges above a correct Ford radio. Below that radio, fresh carpet centers a traditional chrome shifter between ornate Shelby floor mats and Shelby-branded sills. Opposite those mats, a stain-free headliner frames a thick, tubular roll bar. In front of the driver, a gorgeous wood-rimmed steering wheel spins polished spokes around a GT500 centerpiece. At the sides of the passengers, layered door panels feature pristine stainless trim, clean silver inserts and bright Cobra emblems. And behind the cockpit, a restored trunk anchors an attractive plaid mat beneath a re-piped fuel filler and trick power antenna.
