The beneficiary of a professional, ground-up restoration that included new floors and fresh quarter panels, this fully sorted Charger mixes killer street presence with classic Mopar attitude. The car's arrow-straight body, which includes solid-closing doors on top of better-than-factory panel alignment, was stripped to bare metal, massaged into shape and thoroughly block-sanded into virtually flawless surfaces. Once those surfaces were completely clean and fully prepped, their all-business demeanor was re-gifted via correct Black two-stage. And today, this positively evil classic rolls as a spectacular 'show and go' piece that's so much fun it'll make you feel guilty!
There's just something about a broad-shouldered Dodge that appeals to pretty much everyone. Whether it's 'wow factor', a sense of strength or simple surface detailing, this coupe's hard-edged, modernist panels convey classic Chrysler charm via clean and monochromatic aesthetics. At the front of the car, a prominent, dual-port grille hangs a bright “Charger R/T” script between a body-width bumper, artfully hidden headlights and round, fratzog-branded marker lamps. Above that grille, a scalloped hood leads the eye to like-new glass that's cleared by traditional silver wipers and framed in bright stainless trim. At the sides of that hood, a faceted profile centers “Charger”, “R/T and “HEMI” scripts between Chrysler door handles, a stylish chrome mirror and a familiar 'pit stop' fuel filler. And at the back of that profile, wide tail lights illuminate a third “R/T” emblem, a second body-width bumper and clean stainless exhaust tips.
Toss the car's long hood and you'll find an original, 426 cubic inch Hemi V8 that displays a famous 2468330 casting number and October (10) 7th (7) 1968 (68) casting date above a matching VIN stamp. As the Dodge division's top option for power hungry gearheads, Chrysler's legendary elephant block utilizes cast iron heads, an oversquare bore, a forged steel crank, forged steel rods, forged aluminum pistons and a hydraulic cam to twist stout 10.25 to 1 compression into a stated 425 horsepower and 490 lb./ft. of torque. All that high performance hardware spins in a glossy, Hemi Orange block that hangs attractive, Organisol-coated valve covers over correct, low-restriction exhaust manifolds. A perfect mixture of fuel and air is supplied by large 4-barrel carburetors and a high performance, cast iron intake. Compression is sparked by high quality Taylor plug wires, which are jolted by reliable electronic ignition. And resultant combustion is cooled by a correct 26-inch radiator that's fitted with fresh hoses and old school squeeze clamps. Visually, the car's Black engine compartment is clean and understated… Well, as understated as a classic Hemi can be. The car performs just as well as when it rolled across the Canadian border. And naturally, details like a correct chrome air cleaner, a reproduction Mopar battery and a familiar Chrysler washer reservoir have been professionally restored or completely replicated.
Under this pillarless B-Body, glossy floors frame a solid chassis that's been massaged far beyond factory standards. Like its Hemi V8, the car's original A727 Torqueflite, which is branded with a matching VIN stamp, needed very little work to be in tight, like-new condition. That stalwart gearbox sends power to a correct Dana 60 rear end, which is equipped with correct 4.10 gears. At the front of the car, Chrysler's beefy Hemi suspension utilizes familiar torsion bars, an A12 sway bar and traditional manual steering to make quick work of big bumps and tight curves. At the back of the car, that same Hemi suspension hangs correctly staggered springs at the sides of a leak-free fuel tank. Stops come courtesy of correct power front disc and rear drum brakes. Exhaust is handled by aluminized tubes that bend around an H-shaped crossover, factory replacement mufflers, correct resonators and bright stainless tips. And all this Mopar goodness rolls on standard steel wheels, which spin F70-15 Firestone Wide Oval Super Sports between dent-free wheels lips and satin-finished center caps.
Inside this awesome Dodge, a mostly original interior is clean, well-fitted and surprisingly stylish. The correct front bucket and rear bench seats display no significant signs of wear. In front of those thrones, an expertly restored dash hangs rebuilt factory gauges beside a vintage Chryco radio. At the bottom of that dash, like-new carpet centers “Charger” branded floor mats on a traditional chrome shifter and long, wood-trimmed console. At the sides of that carpet, fresh door panels hang new armrests and pliable map pockets under bright stainless trim and orange-tinged “Charger” emblems. Above those panels, old school shoulder belts frame a tight, black headliner. In front of the driver, a wood steering wheel spins satin-finished spokes around a monochromatic, fratzog-branded horn button. And behind the passengers, a professionally restored trunk features a plaid mat, fresh decal, full-size spare and correct jack.
The sale of this impressive coupe includes a broadcast sheet, an owner's manual and a note referencing its Canadian origins.
With a tenacious big block, a proven 3-speed and a correct black on black color combination, this super cool Mopar combines explosive horsepower with boundless appeal. It's fast. It's tons of fun. And best of all, you're hard-earned money is buying a car that's likely to continue gaining value. If you're in the market for some stunning Detroit metal that has the bare-knuckle muscle to back up its killer good looks, this Charger is your next classic!
