Description

The mighty Chevelle is one of America's all-time automotive success stories. It's a straight-forward, badass muscle car which is just as well regarded now that it populates classic car fields as it was decades ago when it populated dealer showrooms. Just last year, the SS 454 came very close to winning General Motor's factory sponsored vote for the ultimate Chevrolet for the division's first hundred years. And when you take a close look at a gem like this pristine Mist Green coupe, you'll understand exactly why. As an inherently scarce real-deal Super Sport, documented & numbers matching, this awesome bowtie is 1 of only 3 Flint assembled units listed on the national LS6 Registry. Additionally, it wraps an accurately detailed drivetrain and a long list of original, correct and rare components in a mostly original all-GM body. And, when you add in the fact that it's fully documented and fresh out of a hundred point rotisserie restoration, you get one incredible, investment grade classic that's quite possibly the last of its kind. If you're looking for solid Chevelle attitude, but want something that's unique enough to make even the most jaded gearhead stop and stare, THIS is the car for you!

As muscle car enthusiasts, we all know it can be very hard to prove a true 1970 Chevelle Super Sport. Fortunately, the sale of this pristine A-body includes an original window sticker. Here's what this real-deal SS454 looked like when it rolled out of GM's Flint manufacturing facility:

According to the aforementioned window sticker, this clean muscle car was originally shipped from GM's storied Flint manufacturing facility to Casey Chevrolet in Chicopee, Massachusetts where it began a 42 year journey to our RK Motors Charlotte showroom. When the previous owner acquired the car it was a rare, super clean survivor that, while nice, was in need of a minor freshening. So, he decided to subject it to a no-expense-spared, no-holds barred rotisserie restoration which resulted in the concours level show stopper you see today. The professional restorers began by completely stripping the all-original body, welding up one new GM-supplied quarter panel and massaging every one of the car's surfaces to near perfection. Once those panels were as straight and flat as possible, the smooth fuselage was disassembled, layered in a correct coat of GM code 45 Mist Green urethane and decorated with spotless black war paint. And the result is one arrow-straight classic which displays a super-reflective finish, possesses few imperfections and exists as a stunning muscle car that will likely never lose its crowd gathering appeal.

Aesthetically, many enthusiasts believe the '70 Chevelle introduced a host of excellent refinements which transformed the 'good' design of Chevrolet's '69 model into something 'great'. At the front of this pastel pavement pounder you'll find a familiar crossbar grille which hangs a fresh and prominent “SS” emblem between a small “CHEVELLE” script, four chrome-seated T3 headlights and a fresh front bumper. Above that bumper, a functional cowl induction hood anchors rebuilt hide-a-way wipers at the base of factory-tinted glass that's framed by pristine stainless trim and capped by new chrome drip rails. At the base of those drip rails, new red and white inlayed “SS454” badges combine with straight stainless wheel frames, traditional chrome door handles and a flashy chrome mirror to add nice visual detail to the car's liquid smooth profile. And at the back of that profile, a second chrome bumper hangs a familiar black Super Sport inlay between clear brake lights, a fresh “Chevelle by Chevrolet” decklid emblem and spotless chrome exhaust tips which ensure the big 454 is both seen and heard.

In 1970, the biggest and baddest motor you could shove between the fenders of an all-steel Chevrolet passenger car was the mighty LS6 454 V8. And this coupe's hot big block, which produces north of 460 horsepower, twists out roughly 500 lb./ft. of torque, and wears an LS6-exclusvie “CRV” suffix stamp in front of a familiar 3963512 casting number and a February (B) 19th (19) of 1970 (70) date code, has been completely restored to 100% factory-correct condition! This is the original, assembly-line installed LS6 454 to the car. Peer under the pin-less cowl induction hood and you'll find a chrome topped, dual-snorkel air cleaner which forces oxygen through a fresh filter element into a new Holley carburetor and an original Winter intake. At the sides of that intake, original 3964921 square port heads hang original chrome valve covers over NOS connecting rods, fully restored exhaust manifolds and a correct smog pump. Behind that smog pump, correct Packard TV R Suppression wires trace small chrome looms to an original points distributor. Opposite that distributor, fresh V-belts and correct pulleys spin an original power steering pump, a date-correct water pump and a correct heavy duty alternator in front of an original timing chain cover and an original water neck. And at the back of the block, a fully rebuilt wiper motor rides beside a correct Delco Moraine brake booster. As you've probably noticed, the clean engine bay is dressed in a pristine combination of smooth black panels, glossy orange paint, and factory-accurate overspray; just as it left the showroom. And all the car's details, from accurate chalk marks and a reproduction Delco Energizer battery to reproduction GM hoses, dated tower clamps and a full array of fresh decals, are on target and exceptionally well-done!

Naturally the bottom of this Chevelle is just as clean and correctly restored as its original body panels and pristine engine bay. The car's rust-free floors are covered in a nice combination of satin black frame spray, Mist Green overspray and red oxide primer. Its factory correct F41 heavy duty suspension, which includes thicker coils, heavy duty shocks, a larger diameter front sway bar, a standard rear sway bar, boxed rear control arms and upper rear cross braces, has been restored to better-than-new condition. Behind the big block motor is the original Rock Crusher 4-speed, which is branded with a correct 3925661 casting number and an M22 (C) Muncie (P) assembled on February (B) 25th (25) of 1970 (0) build stamp, sends power to a freshly detailed driveshaft. That driveshaft spins a correct 12 bolt Posi-traction rear end that's branded with an accurate February (B) 10th (10) of 1970 (0) casting date, stamped with a correct “CRW” suffix code and stuffed with big 4.10 gears. At the sides of that driveshaft, a factory accurate true dual exhaust system sends spent gases through wrinkle bent pipes, factory replacement mufflers, correct resonators and spotless chrome tips. At the sides of that exhaust system, power front disc and original rear drum brakes, which were cast on February (B) 13th (13) and 19th (19) of 1970 (70), combine with traditional power steering to make the most of cornering and stopping abilities. At the sides of those restored brakes, attractive 14 inch Chevrolet Super Sport wheels spin great looking F70-14 Goodyear Polyglas tires around “SS” branded center caps. And while this Super Sport's specs sound pretty straight forward, the attention to detail on its undercarriage is remarkable with proper tags, chalk marks and paint daubs all present and accounted for.

Featuring a host of new components, and decked in what is arguably one of the coolest colors offered for the 1970 model year, this Chevelle's correctly restored GM code 795 Metallic Dark Green interior is both inviting and unique. Its slick bench seats are firm to the touch and show no signs of wear and tear at all. At the top of those seats, a tight green headliner hides behind color-keyed shoulder belts. At the sides of those seats, clean green door panels hang spotless stainless trim and prerequisite SS emblems above bright chrome handles and new green armrests. Below those seats new green carpet, which is protected by rugged rubber floor mats, anchors a chrome Muncie shifter just to the right of the driver. In front of that shifter, a straight and crack-free dash hangs a deluxe Chevelle gauge cluster between a correct Delco AM radio and new cardboard tags. In front of the driver, a black Super Sport steering wheel keeps everybody pointed in the right direction. And behind the passengers, a fully restored trunk centers a full-size spare tire and correct jack assembly between a new mat and fresh decklid decals.

The sale of this highly exclusive SS 454 includes the original window sticker outlined above, an original owner's manual, an old school Chevrolet vinyl, a photo album of the car's hundred point restoration, a highly detailed list of every original, correct and NOS part used for that restoration, a certificate confirming the car's status on the LS6 registry, and a few small display cards.

This incredible green Chevelle is the very definition of investment grade muscle. It's rare, it's fully documented, it's numbers matching. it sports a long list of original and NOS equipment; and on top of all that, it carries a highly detailed, paint shop fresh restoration! If you've been looking for a unique and appealing muscle car that's top notch in every way, your search is happily over!
