Description

You can ask pretty much any Corvette guy what the paramount vintage Vette is and he'll probably say “C2”. When you counter with words like “327” and “Muncie”, the phrases “ultimate” and “blue chip” become a natural settling point. And investors clearly agree, since prices on mid-year Chevys remain solid year after year despite the state of the economy. A splendid candidate for any serious gearhead, this mid-year Vette is a numbers-matching piece that, thanks to a meticulous restoration, wears correct Sebring Silver paint, a correct Red interior and better-than-factory aesthetics. And when all that classic Americana is wrapped in a 1963-exclusive split-window body, “blue chip” starts to really take shape. So, what are you waiting for? Give your friends at RK Motors Charlotte a call and experience this “ultimate” Corvette!

Before we go any further, I'll provide some background on this 'no expenses spared' sports car by decoding both its VIN and trim tag.

Many Corvette enthusiasts regard the C2 as Chevrolet's purest Corvette design. And that's very easy to understand given this coupe's small dimensions, purpose-built form and athletic demeanor. Of course, those qualities are best viewed through a beautiful restoration and, fortunately, the guys who reworked this Sting Ray did a fantastic job. Since the previous owner's goal was to have a classic that's both striking and functional, he made sure the car's body was clean, laser-straight and much nicer than any factory-correct original. Once that level of fit and finish was attained, a buttery layer of correct Sebring Silver basecoat was sealed in glossy clear. And the rest, as they say, is six-figure, show-stopping history!

Thanks to a renewed dedication to motorsports, and heavy influence from the original Mako Shark concept car, the second generation Corvette sports a very athletic appearance. At the front of this classic, a low-slung clip tucks a stainless-trimmed grille behind thin 'razor blade' bumpers and bright, bullet-style parking lamps. Above that grille, hidden headlights highlight a familiar cross-flag emblem while a 1963-exclusive hood adds a touch of class. Behind those headlights, a GT profile hangs colorful fender badging between traditional door handles, beefy rocker guards and a stylish bowtie mirror. At the top of that profile, like-new glass rides between polished wipers and straight stainless frames. And the car's sloped decklid centers a cross-flag-branded fuel cap above a bright Sting Ray emblem, round taillights, two more 'razor blade' bumpers and traditional stainless exhaust tips.

Tilt this Corvette's fiberglass hood and you'll find an original L76 V8 which hangs a familiar 3782870 casting number behind a correct “RE” suffix stamp and matching partial VIN. Introduced as a formidable companion for street prowling Sting Rays, this high performance small block utilizes solid lifters, high-flow heads and a high performance cam to turn stout 11.25 to 1 compression into 340 horsepower. At the top of the spry block, a polished air cleaner funnels wind into a big Carter carburetor that's threaded onto fresh stainless fuel lines. Below that juice box, a slick aluminum intake perfectly complements finned Corvette valve covers. At the back of that intake, a chrome-cased ignition shoots spark past correct exhaust manifolds via chrome-sleeved wires. And at the front of those manifolds, a Harrison-branded radiator circulates water through pliable GM hoses and authentic tower clamps. Whoever performed the restoration on this Corvette did an excellent job of creating an attractive, reliable engine bay that is every bit as detailed as the rest of the car. Bright Chevy Orange paint covers the block from its clean oil pan all the way to its chrome oil filler and, as always, looks great against GM's Satin Black bay. As expected, correct textures and decals are present and accounted for. And details like a rebuilt alternator, rebuilt master cylinder and big Delco battery ensure this Chevy runs every bit as good as it looks.

Flip this small block Vette upside down and you'll find a solid chassis that's in good shape, and today, looks much nicer than when it rolled off the showroom floor. A rugged Muncie 4-speed, which follows a matching partial VIN with a 1963-exclusive 3831704 casting number, makes good use of what appears to be a correct posi-traction rear end. At the ends of the car, a fully sorted double A-arm front and independent rear suspension is completely detailed down to its fresh shocks, correct springs and standard manual steering. Above that rebuilt suspension, solid floor tubs, which look factory fresh in every way, ride on a straight, Satin Black frame. At the corners of those floors, beefy, power-assisted drums mix good handling characteristics with quick and solid stops. At the edges of those brakes, torque flows to the pavement through reproduction turbines, which lap 6.70-15 BF Goodrich Silvertown whitewalls around bright chrome spinners. And everything, from this Corvette's stainless brake lines to its aluminized exhaust system, is fully sorted and ready to roll!

Open this Chevy's tossable doors and you'll find a correct Red interior that's comprised of a nice assimilation of clean and weather-free components. Seating comes courtesy of firm vinyl thrones that are anchored between bright stainless trim and a small chrome shifter. From the driver's perch, stock gauges bleed onto their bordering panels in a march toward a center-mount clock, correct Delco radio and aluminum-trimmed glove box. Below that clock, like-new carpet is protected by prerequisite mats and predictable chrome sills. Above those mats, stainless-trimmed door panels hang traditional armrests between small black handles, convenient power windows and stylish chrome accents. In front of the driver, a satin-spoked steering wheel spins around a brilliant cross-flag emblem. And behind the passengers, a fully carpeted storage compartment boasts just enough room for trophies and a display board.

The sale of this sterling split-window includes an NCRS Shipping Data Report.

This stunning Sting Ray has an awful lot going for it. A coveted 327… A desirable Muncie 4-speed... A clean, accurate restoration… Not to mention, one look at price books, a market analysis or your favorite classifieds will reveal that, in general, C2 prices have been virtually immune to dips and recessions. Simply put: Corvettes are great cars to own, and this wonderfully restored coupe is an investment grade classic that'll serve you well both on the road and at the show!
