And, if you've yet to become a true believer, just take one ride in this showroom-fresh 2007 Saleen S281 Extreme and you'll line right up to preach the virtues of superchargers and sing the praises of sport suspensions. This stunning S281 Extreme, car number 7 for the 2007 model year, wraps a blown V8 and slick Tremec 6-speed in Saleen's typical array of track-tested technology. In the world of collector cars, there's rare and then there's exclusive. Not only is this Mustang rare, as one of only 1,659 Saleens believed to be produced for the 2007 model year. It's also highly exclusive, as one of only 114 Saleen Extremes believed to be produced for the 2007 model year. And, in case you're thinking this is just a badge and sticker package with little substance, bear in mind that checking the Extreme box meant automatic access to a 550 horsepower version of Ford's stalwart mod motor.

This rowdy coupe is a low-mileage land rocket that, like most of our factory-fresh offerings, is virtually spotless in every way. The car's super straight body displays a glossy layer of vivid Torch Red basecoat that, judging by its smooth appearance, has been maintained with the utmost care. That bright red pigment lays the groundwork for a blanket of traditional Saleen modifications which are tastefully designed and carefully applied. Of course, this blue oval bombshell has never seen major body work because it's a 100% accident-free showpiece that's been in the hands of dedicated enthusiasts. There's essentially nothing on the car that could be considered more than prerequisite shelf wear. Combining clean factory sheetmetal with a functional aero kit, this awesome Ford rarity is ready to parade the midway and willing to tackle the track. At the front of its body, an injection-molded valence hangs a silver “07” between a Saleen carbon splitter, a “SALEEN” branded grille and Saleen HID headlights. Behind those lights, a vented Saleen hood, which mixes added clearance with functional heat extraction, leads the eye to black mirrors and “SALEEN” branded glass. At the sides of the roof, aggressive Saleen rockers frame small stripes and subtle “S281 EXTREME” emblems. And at the back of the car, a large Saleen spoiler and custom body extensions complement a textured valence, a “SALEEN” branded bumper and a Saleen carbon diffuser that frames centered Saleen exhaust.

Saleen's oft-repeated motto has always been “Power in the Hands of a Few”. And with this Mustang, there's LOTS of power in the hands of VERY few. Locked, loaded and ready to roll, the S281 Extreme-exclusive monster that rumbles under the aforementioned hood is, by far, the car's biggest selling point. A smooth, rev-happy V8 that's based on Ford's award-winning 'mod motor', this mill can trace its proven reliability to everything from Mustangs and Explorers to F-150s and Mountaineers. And, thanks to the addition of Saleen's Series VI supercharger, it twists a killer 550 horsepower into 525 lb./ft. of tire melting torque! Visually, the storied engine's frame comes together just as well as the outside of the car. Saleen's install is exceptionally clean, forgoing the 'plastic dome of doom' engine cover trend in favor of a Saleen-branded centerpiece, clean fuel rails and a small Saleen plaque. The hot mill is a melting pot of machined and natural finishes that contrast well against the car's bright red paint. And best of all, this muscle-bound brute will fire up in any weather, drive thousands of miles before anyone needs to turn its bolts, and certainly lay waste to almost any old school muscle car that's brave enough to pick a fight.

The greatest advancement granted by the current Mustang platform is its ability to corner like a true thoroughbred. Ford's standard Macpherson Strut and Panhard Rod set up offers some of the purest handling found in any OEM street car. And, in keeping with their own race ancestry, Saleen's Racecraft engineers carefully chose springs, shocks, and struts that augment that already impressive chassis without sacrificing ride quality. Behind the car's supercharged engine, a rugged Tremec T56 6-speed drives big 4.10 gears that mix spectacular wheel spin with great acceleration. Charred dinosaurs are expelled through a modified exhaust system, which incorporates Saleen's vacuum-actuated mufflers into big, 2.5-inch pipes. Braking is handled by a combination of OEM Ford calipers, 6-piston Saleen calipers and vented and slotted rotors. Ample grip is supplied by familiar Saleen blades, which spin meaty 275/35ZR20 Pirelli P Zero Rossos in front of meatier 275/40ZR20 Pirelli P Zero Rossos.

Slide inside this low-slung Ford and you'll immediately notice that its stitched and louvered seats are every bit as comfortable as they are attractive. In front of those “SALEEN” branded buckets, a familiar Mustang dash hangs Saleen black-face telemetry behind satin silver trim, Saleen ancillary gauges and a small Saleen plaque. Below that dash, Shaker 500 audio combines with factory climate control and a Rockford Fosgate Punch System to become a one-stop shop for all your convenience needs. Beneath those systems, a wide console anchors a close-ratio Saleen shifter in front of ample storage space. Beneath that console, like-new carpet floats between color-keyed Saleen foot pedals and attractive Saleen sills. Above those sills, sculpted door panels hang full-length armrests between big kick speakers and small metal handles. And naturally, all the luxuries you'd expect in a high dollar muscle car are present and accounted for including: cruise control, power windows, power door locks, power mirrors, a power driver's seat, and remote keyless entry that's complete with built in theft deterrent software.
