Frame Off Restored Chevelle Super Sport 396 V8 4 Speed
Yes, this 1967 Chevelle is much, much more than a pretty face. Forget about trailer queens, decoded cowl tags, and factory equipment, this one is all about pounding the pavement. You can tell from the stance that this SS means business, and with its powerful 402 under the hood, it can back up the look with performance to match. Sophisticated looks are matched by brute strength, creating what might be the coolest and straightest Chevelle we've seen in months.
Assembled at GM's Fremont manufacturing facility, this Chevelle Super Sport wears an exceptionally solid body under a cool coat of correct Tuxedo Black paint and a correct 138 VIN prefix that designates this as a true SS. During the car's extensive restoration, that body was completely disassembled, massaged into a laser-straight canvas, and expertly detailed to provide a show stopping appearance that's built around better-than-factory panel alignment. Once that alignment was locked in, carefully sprayed layers of correct GM code AA basecoat were topped with a thick clearcoat shell and thoroughly buffed to an excellent shine. And currently, as a car that's much nicer than any mass-produced survivor from the late 60s, this hardtop carries a super clean finish on top of a high quality restoration that's simply stunning!
Since this Chevy isn't a custom, and really isn't radical in any way, all its trim and ornamentation remains just as the General specified, and looks absolutely stunning. At the front of the car, clear halogen headlights flank a black Super Sport grille which centers a prominent “SS396” emblem between a fresh “CHEVELLE” header script, a new chrome bumper and bright amber parking lights. At the top of the car, a Super Sport twin-scoop hood combines with good looking stainless trim, bright stainless wipers and new chrome drip rails to trace like-new glass. At the sides of the car, “396” fender emblems and quarter-mounted “Super Sport” scripts hint at the true nature of the big block's personality while traditional door handles and snazzy bowtie mirrors perfectly complement straight stainless wheel trim and Super Sport rocker moldings. And at the back of the car, a black Super Sport valence hangs vintage tail lights and a second “SS396” emblem over a showroom fresh bumper and crystal clear reverse lamps.
Glance under this Chevelle's mirror-slick hood and you'll find a 402 big block that wears a 3999290 casting number and an October 17th 1971 date code. The 402 has been thoroughly decorated as a 396 and at the top of the big bad block, a black and chrome single snorkel air cleaner is topped by a pristine “396 Turbo-Jet” decal and feeds oxygen to a 4-barrel carburetor. That air/fuel mixture travels into a cast iron intake manifold sitting between cast iron heads and bright chrome valve covers. At the bottom of those heads, chrome headers send spent gases into a high performance true dual exhaust system. At the back of those manifolds, a traditional points distributor shoots spark through familiar Packard TV R Suppression wires. And in front of those wires, a factory correct radiator swills water through a full set of fresh GM hoses and correct tower clamps. Aesthetically, the spotless big block is covered in a traditional coat of Chevy Orange paint that contrasts very well to the car's satin black fenders and vivid black exterior. And everything from the big mill's reproduction Delco battery to its glass GM washer fluid bottle has been professionally installed and completely show detailed.
What good would a killer big block be without a great drivetrain and suspension to back it up? Behind the car's thundering 402, a rugged Muncie 4-speed sends power to a tried and true 12 bolt. That road-ready drivetrain is held off the ground by a correctly rebuilt chassis which features fresh shocks, power front disc and rear drum brakes. In the middle of the car, an aluminized exhaust system runs from the aforementioned manifolds to aggressive mufflers while fresh stainless fuel lines run from a new stainless fuel tank to the big carburetor. And at the corners of the car, 15 inch rally wheels twist modern P275/60R15 BF Goodrich Radial T/A's around fresh stainless trim rings and smooth stainless center caps. The bottom of this awesome A-Body has been restored to the same high standards as its solid exterior panels and clean engine compartment.
Inside, this Chevelle is equipped with a great looking Bright red vinyl interior that presents as brand new. At the center of the car, front bucket and rear bench seats are in excellent shape and show little to no signs of wear. In front of those seats a warp-free dash hangs a direct fit Chevrolet branded radio inside new chrome trim. Below that dash, a red console props an attractive clock in front of a correct chrome shifter. At the base of that console, heavy duty floor mats that are branded with SS396 protect like-new red carpet that anchors deluxe “Fisher” branded lap belts. At the sides of those floor mats, horizontally pleated door panels hang bright chrome handles and correct red armrests between pristine stainless trim and dent-free Fisher sill plates. And at the top of those panels, a tight headliner hangs fade-free sun visors in front of a fully functional dome light. In front of the driver, a spectacular looking GM Rally wheel features a bright red rim, spotless satin spokes and a SS horn button.
With a stunning motor, an incredible body and a pristine interior, SS396 is a rare, investment grade muscle car. And best of all, it's a unique first generation GM A-body that isn't nearly as prevalent as the more famous, and too often duplicated, second generation SS454. If you're in the market for a no excuses show piece with an unbeatable combination of style and performance, this '67 Super Sport is your kind of car!
