If you've paid attention to BMW over the years, you know that the 7 Series is not only the brand's flagship, but also a test bed for design cues and technologies that eventually trickle down to lesser models. And few cars, let alone BMWs, have sparked as much controversy as the E65 7 Series. Introduced in 2002 to replace the aging E38, the E65 mixed polarizing looks with more technology than most modern battleships. And, despite mixed first impressions, the car went on to become the best-selling 7 Series of all time simply because it was great to drive and be driven in. Dressed in striking Sapphire Black Metallic, this 2008 760Li is a low-mileage example of the cool line-topper so many BMW enthusiasts have grown to love. BODYWORK/TRIM

The 7's appearance was a joint effort between Adrian van Hooydonk and then BMW Chief Designer Chris Bangle. Though the car seems straightforward at first glance, a closer looks reveals a complex blend of short, long, angular, and curved lines that combine to give the E65 its calm and stately appearance. The front remains pure BMW with prominent kidney grilles framed by dual bi-xenon headlamps. The side profile extends a straight line from the edge of those headlamps all the way back to the taillights. Dual heated rearview mirrors anchor graceful A-pillars while providing added convenience when the weather outside is frightful. Above those mirrors, a coupe-like roofline flows in to a split-level decklid that critics nicknamed the “Bangle Butt”. Thanks to a distinctive light bar, luxurious chrome trim and bold “760Li” badging, no one will ever question this BMW's identity. And overall, this stately sedan presents crisp, blemish-free aesthetics, which are draped in the kind of excellent fit and finish that's so closely associated with the world's top-tier luxury cars.

ENGINE/DRIVETRAIN

Since BMW doesn't create M versions of the 7 Series, the E65's performance crown is carried by cars like this 760Li. And they certainly carry it well, as ample motivation is provided by a stout 6.0 liter twin turbo V12. A modernized successor to the storied M73 V12, the N73 utilizes dual overhead cams and Valvetronic variable valve lift to twist 439 horsepower into 442 lb./ft. of smooth torque. With that kind of thrust at its disposal, this relatively heavy sedan is capable of still impressive 5.4 second 0-60 sprints. Behind that mill, a ZF-developed Steptronic 6-speed monitors a variety of parameters in order to best adapt to the owner's preferred driving style. The chassis is equally sophisticated, featuring systems like Dynamic Stability Control, Dynamic Traction Control and Dynamic Braking Control, which clamps down on electronically proportioned 4-wheel ventilated discs. Steering is fully adaptive, thanks to its speed-sensitive, variable-assist, variable-ratio power rack-and-pinion setup. Rolling stock consists of attractive 19-inch alloys, which meet the road through new Pirelli rubber. And all these systems pair with an aluminum double-pivot strut-type front suspension, and 4-link integral rear suspension, to create a driving experience that's worthy of the tagline “Ultimate Driving Machine”.

INTERIOR

Pop the doors and this E65 offers all the luxury you've come to expect from a premium European automaker. The Black leather interior is accented by large expanses of wood, which can be found on the dash, center console and door panels. The front features accommodations for two on heated bucket seats, while a large standard seat fills the rear. Between those seats, the well-dressed console anchors iDrive infotainment: a central computer system that initiates things such as climate, audio and navigation from a single location. From the driver's seat, a simple gauge cluster mixes plainspoken telemetry with attractive orange lighting. In front of those instruments, control of the front wheels is granted through a leather-wrapped steering wheel that's mounted atop a power tilt/telescopic column. Above the driver, a large sunroof brings the outdoors inside. And behind the passengers, a cavernous trunk makes the car ideally suited for extended travel.
