Description

From rare and excusive Shelby products to later SVOs, the Mustang camp has always provided it's fans with a whole portfolio of unique options and industrial-strength powertrains that become instant classics as soon as they hit the showroom. While cars like the Boss 429 or GT350 may have added to the Mustang's performance legacy, cars like this pristine 1984 survivor remain the marque's bread and butter. Combining comfort, performance and all-around usability into one clean and attractive package, this fully documented convertible is likely one of the nicest original Fox Bodies on the planet. Driven a mere 7,856 miles since leaving the showroom, the car looks and feels fresh in every way imaginable. And if you're looking for a new-age classic to preserve and enjoy, it's a great choice!

The early '80s saw Ford working within their new 'Aero' look that brought sharp angles, clean profiles and an array of smoother surfaces to the company's entire passenger car lineup. For the Mustang, that meant a classic 2+2 shape which rode on a whittled stance. And although Dearborn's corporate look remained obvious, a mix of chiseled lines and aggressive bolt-ons allowed the car to keep its unique identity. This low-mileage GT wears a nicely maintained coat of Oxford White single-stage that was sprayed by the good folks at Ford's Dearborn assembly plant. By the '80s, assembly line work had come a long way. So the car's finish looks good, especially under a matte GT hood stripe, and panel fitment is solid all around. And when the weather acts up, a white convertible top comes to the rescue, protecting the interior while complementing its bright foundation.

Authenticated by an original build sheet, this GT's nimble and aggressive nature is translated through subtle and tasteful detailing. Up front, a GT-trimmed fascia anchors a black, “Ford” branded grille between crisp headlights, Oxford buckets and Marchal driving lamps. That grille flows into a “GT” branded hood and what appears to be original greenhouse glass. At the sides of that glass, a GT-trimmed profile positions legendary “5.0” badges beneath bold “GT” call-outs, flip-up door handles and simple mirrors. And at the back of that profile, colorful taillights float between stainless exhaust tips, a blue “Ford” oval and mixed “MUSTANG GT” badging.

The Mustang has long been the champion of budget performance cars, and much of that has to do with the rock-solid engines Ford bolts between the car's fenders. Pop the hood on this GT and you'll find a low-mileage example of the venerable 5.0 Windsor block. While this mill made its first appearance in the budget-minded Fairlane, it eventually became a trusted ally on the highway, drag strip and road course. The proven powerplant utilizes a 600cfm carburetor, free-flowing heads, an aggressive marine cam and a rugged iron block to create an unbeatable combination of smooth cruising and spirited performance. In its current state, the engine remains stock, producing 175 horsepower and 245 lb./ft. of torque. There's a cool Parnelli Jones autograph on one of the strut towers. And, with just under 8K miles on the clock, the car is ripe for few more decades of casual cruising!

Load this pony on a lift and you'll find a well-preserved undercarriage that's bolted to original, rust-free floorpans. A tough 5-speed manual transmission sends power to a familiar Ford axle. In front of that drivetrain, a double A-arm suspension remains just as it looked back in 1984. And the same holds true behind that drivetrain, where a nice combination of shocks and coil springs maintains ride height and adds ample grip. Power front disc and rear drum brakes are a welcome addition and big performance upgrade. There's a single-pipe exhaust system, which stacks a large catalyst in front of a Ford-branded muffler and factory Y-pipe. And everything rides on attractive TRX alloys, which spin old school 220/55VR390 Michelin TRX radials.

Between the doors, a bold Canyon Red interior offers a great balance between daily and high performance needs. Original bucket seats are firm and supportive, showing minimal overall wear. Between those seats, a stitched console centers a digital clock, a digital stopwatch function and Graphic Warning Display Module in front of a simple black shifter. The car's stylish, silver-trimmed dashboard is in great shape and free of cracks and scratches. The carpet, headliner, door panels and other soft surfaces retain their showroom charm thanks to an easy, well-maintained life. In front of the driver, a black, Ford-branded steering wheel laps a tilting column and clear Ford telemetry. Behind the passengers, a small trunk features enough room for a weekend's worth of luggage. And everything, from the car's factory power windows to its Ford cruise control, is present, accounted for and ready to hit the road

The sale of this tidy drop-top includes the aforementioned build sheet, an original owner's manual and an original owner card.

Even the baddest production Mustangs have been great cars capable of daily driving duties. This authentic GT doesn't vary from that path whatsoever. From its clean looks to its driver-friendly interior, this is the kind of cruiser you can truly live with. Factor in a low-mileage motor and slick shifting 5-speed and this pony keeps looking better and better. Become a part of the 5.0 family, don't miss out on this awesome GT!
