----------

Most GM enthusiasts remember the dark days of the company's bankruptcy like it was yesterday. And while the death of General Motors Corporation was the main fodder for media ratings, there was a second story that, while not quite as dramatic, was much more significant to collectors. In January of 2009, the GM Heritage Center decided to cull its 1,000 plus car collection by roughly 25%. Much of the auctioned metal was production-based concepts and vintage pilot cars. And that's exactly where we believe this extremely low mileage Trans Am convertible came from. Equipped with an exceptionally early Firebird VIN, and branded with a “NONSALABLE VEHICLE” door sticker, this spotless drop-top was shipped directly to Pontiac corporate for use as a 25th Anniversary Trans Am pilot car. If you enjoy unique collector cars that provide a lot of exclusivity for not a lot of money, you've discovered your next classic!

BODYWORK/TRIM

Displaying official aesthetics for the 250 Trans Am Anniversary convertibles that would end up in the hands of enthusiasts, this clean drop-top is a well-maintained garage queen that's seen very little pavement time. 100% straight, with no history of catastrophic damage, the car's fuselage is an even wedge of mostly original paint. High quality 25th Anniversary-exclusive call-outs, courtesy of GM's St. Therese, Quebec assembly plant, still shine with the best cars on the road. When the weather acts up, a white convertible top comes to the rescue, protecting the interior while complementing its bright foundation. And overall, this Pontiac conveys a premium sense of collectability that, when combined with its spectacular performance, creates a timeless modern classic.

ENGINE

If you find a Pontiac with Screamin' Chicken badges, chances are good that something mean lives under the hood. This top-of-the-line F4 validates that chance variable with a venerable 5.7L LT1 V8. Not to be confused with the high-performance LT-1 of the '70s, this version was introduced in 1992 as primary motivation for the C4 Corvette. By 1994, the basic formula of a 2-bolt main block with aluminum heads remained, but the motor had been revised to employ a Mass Airflow Sensor and Sequential Port Fuel Injection. And power was up to 275 horses, which translated to low 14-second quarter mile passes right off the assembly line.

DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION

Peer under this drop-top and you'll find a clean chassis that's been preserved via limited road use. Behind the LT1, a requisite 4L60E 4-speed twists torque through highway-friendly, 2.73 gears. Around that drivetrain, a stock suspension follows a double A-arm front half with a 3-link rear end. Power rack-and-pinion steering makes turning a breeze while power-assisted discs bring the car to a quick halt. And everything rolls on body-matched, Trans Am-branded wheels, which spin what appear to be original 245/50ZR16 Goodyear Eagle GS-Cs.

INTERIOR

Inside the car, an upscale Trans Am GT interior is built around bright bucket seats that adjust electronically for the driver and front passenger. A leather-clad steering wheel sports convenient thumb controls for a premium Delco 2001 sound system. The instrument panel is a familiar red Pontiac layout that features a large tachometer and sweeping speedometer. At the floor, a conservative shifter rides in a straight and clean console. And naturally, all the luxuries you'd expect in a modern car are present and accounted for including: power windows, power door locks, power mirrors and remote keyless entry that's complete with GM's PASSkey theft deterrent system. Everything is in impeccable working order, from its optional cruise control all the way to its factory air conditioning.

Whether you're an avid GM enthusiast, or a red-blooded car buff who enjoys unique metal, you simply can't deny the amount of conversation this Trans Am generates. There's a reason this spotless F4 sports roughly 1,500 original miles – it probably spent most of its time being paraded around to GM dealers as a pioneering ambassador for one of the last great hurrah's of America's excitement division. And now, you can preserve all of that history and performance for what amounts to the price of today's beige sedans. Call your friends at RK Motors Charlotte for more information!
