BODYWORK/TRIM

In America, we like two things: horsepower and trucks. And nobody combines the two better than Chrysler's SRT division: the creators of the mighty Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8. Faster than a Porsche Cayenne while retaining legendary Jeep all-wheel drive, it's the all-weather hauler that moves like a sports car!

When most people think of an SUV, they picture something tall, large and sturdy that has just enough style to appeal to a wide range of drivers. And Jeep makes sure every one of its offerings hits those points right on the nose. The Grand Cherokee got a pretty thorough makeover in 2008, but there's no mistaking this rig for anything else on the road. Tall side panels and a commanding front end give the truck a strong presence. The SRT guys made sure that upright formula was camouflaged in plenty of war paint, adding revised fascias, deeper side skirts and impressive rolling stock. A smooth, factory-shot coat of Bright Silver Metallic tops that camo, looking showroom-fresh in virtually every way. Thanks to modern production methods, panel fitment is great, as is overall fit and finish. And, as a well-maintained enthusiast's special that's back by a clean CARFAX, the truck's body is free of any noteworthy flaws.

ENGINE

Of course, there's only one question that comes to mind with any true MoPar – Does it have a Hemi? At the heart of the Grand Cherokee SRT8, a stout 6.1 liter Hemi V8 utilizes 425 horsepower to transform what's essentially a stable station wagon into an Autobahn-bred stormer. While not as brutally moody as the 426 Elephant that immediately springs to mind, the Gen III Hemi is an award-winning motor that features a great mix of old school power and modern technology. Chrysler's install is exceptionally clean and forgoes the current 'plastic dome of doom' engine cover trend in favor of “HEMI 6.1L” branded rail shrouds that actually resemble tall valve covers. The big block is coated in a nice shade of traditional orange paint that contrasts well against the truck's silver engine bay. An aftermarket cold air intake probably helps squeeze out a few extra ponies. And, best of all, this is a Hemi that'll fire up in any weather, drive thousands of miles before anyone needs to turn its bolts, and probably lay waste to any old school muscle car that's brave enough to stage a challenge.

DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION

Peek under this Jeep and you'll find a chassis that proudly displays years of good care. The undercarriage remains clean and free of any visible issues. At the center of the floors, a 5-speed automatic transmission adds a little bit of fuel economy. As previously mentioned, power hits the pavement through performance-tuned all-wheel-drive. The truck's unmodified suspension consists of unequal length double wishbones up front and a multi-link rear. And naturally, steering is power assisted as are the Brembo brakes, which utilize four discs and standard anti-lock software to scrub speed. Thanks to that all-wheel-drive system, one punch of the throttle makes the truck seemingly defy the laws of physics; lunging forward like it's attached to a giant recoiling rubber band. The automatic transmission seems willing and the suspension is lowered and firmed up to cope with the Hemi's copious power. And at the corners, handsome Alcoa-forged wheels spin new 255/45R20 Nitto NT420S up front, and new 285/40R20 Nitto NT420S at the rear.

INTERIOR

Chances are, if you're looking at an SUV, you probably need to carry people, things or some combination of both. No matter what the case, this Jeep will come through with flying colors. Deeply bolstered seats, wrapped in clean black leather, hold you in place like vices. Ample SRT8 brandings remind you exactly why you paid a little extra. Most of the truck's uplevel equipment came factory-standard, including: cruise, AC, power windows, power door locks, remote keyless entry and a kickin' stereo system. And this SRT also includes options like navigation, a back-up camera, a sunroof and power, heated seats. A few creases on the leather is all we can see as far as wear, and, thanks to SRT-branded floor mats, the carpets are almost like new. Carbon fiber and aluminum trim provide high tech aesthetics. The air conditioning system was recently serviced with a new blower motor, evaporator core, and heater core, so you can count on all-day comfort in the cabin no matter what the elements are like outside. And, as a well-maintained enthusiast vehicle, the overall aura of this Jeep's cockpit is that of a clean, much-loved cruiser.
