Because their production was so low to begin with, early second generation Trans Ams are becoming increasingly hard to purchase. And when you throw in the fact that, for years, first generation cars got all the glory in the eyes of restorers, it complicates the search even more. Take a stroll through a bit of online inventory and generally you'll find either white glove show queens that command high dollar prices or rusted out basket cases in need of high dollar restorations. Well Pontiac fans, today is your lucky day! RK Motors Charlotte is happy to feature this killer 1970 Ram Air III, which combines a striking blue on black color combination with an original 400 cubic inch V8 and correct Turbo-Hydramatic 3-speed transmission. Not only does this stunning Poncho have the power to back up its outstanding looks, it's also the beneficiary of a recent ground-up restoration that's so clean you'd think it's hardly been driven. So, if you're a Trans Am enthusiast who's searching for the elusive F2 that you can literally purchase and drive straight to the show, we've got the car for you!

BODYWORK/TRIM

Assembled at GM's fabled Van Nuys manufacturing facility in May of 1970, this awesome 'bird was shipped across the country to Koopman Pontiac in Sheldon, Iowa where it began a 45 year existence filled with immaculate maintenance and impeccable care. Today, wearing a professional restoration that was conducted by the crew at MASCAR Auto Body of Costa Mesa, California, the car displays a glossy coat of correct Lucerne Blue 2-stage. And that cool pigment is complemented by a correct set of “TRANS AM” call-outs which, along with a centered roof stripe and aggressive 'Screaming Chicken' header decal, create some of the most iconic and desirable war paint in automotive history. By the way, if the name of that shop sounds familiar, it's because, in addition to being featured on Overhaulin', MASCAR has completed many of our "world class":http://www.rkmotorscharlotte.com/sales/inventory/sold/1970-Ford-Mustang-Boss-302/134303#!/ "Mustang":http://www.rkmotorscharlotte.com/sales/inventory/top_sales_2014/1968-Ford-Mustang-GT/134779#!/ "offerings":http://www.rkmotorscharlotte.com/sales/inventory/top_sales_2011/1969-Ford-Mustang-Boss-302/134473#!/

ENGINE

Take a look under this Tin Indian's long hood and you'll find an original, 400 cubic inch L74 Ram Air III V8 that, in addition to wearing all the right numbers, has been overbored to produce 450 horsepower and 525 lb./ft. of tire-shredding torque. Those numbers include a correct 9799914 casting, a correct “YZ” assembly stamp and a matching partial VIN. And the ported and polished block is founded on an Eagle crank, Eagle rods, ROSS Racing pistons and a rowdy Crane cam. Rochester Quadrajet carburetion combines with an MSD coil, a familiar points distributor and high quality Taylor plug wires to kick start combustion. Fuel and air flow in to GM heads, which hang mirrored valve covers over Crane lifters, Smith Brothers pushrods, PRW roller rockers, Manley valves and Comp Beehive springs. Ram Air Products exhaust manifolds flow much better than stock, while appearing to be stock. Traditional V-belts spin billet timing components behind a beefy Milodon water pump. And items like a Delco Moraine brake booster, modern air conditioning and a hard working Melling oil pump add proven merit to the car's show stopping style.

DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION

At the bottom of this slick second generation Trans Am, solid floorpans reflect a ground-up restoration while a fully rebuilt suspension tells the story of excellent maintenance and very little road time. Behind the monster motor, a rugged Turbo-Hydramatic 400 3-speed, which wears a correct “70-PQ” assembly tag, spins power to a 12-bolt posi-traction rear end that's fitted with friendly 3.42 gears. Below that stellar drivetrain, a lowered Trans Am suspension, which includes factory power steering, thicker sway bars, better shocks and stiffer springs, combines with standard issue power front disc and rear drum brakes to provide quick stops and great handling. At the center of that Satin Black chassis, a Pypes stainless exhaust system barks out a deep, vintage roar from a transverse Race Pro muffler and polished stainless tips. That roster of proven hardware rolls on 17-inch Pontiac Rally II replicas, which twist 245/45 BF Goodrich g-Force Sports in front of 255/45 BF Goodrich g-Force Sports. And everything, from this Pontiac's urethane body bushings to its Drivelines Incorporated driveshaft, appears to be in good, road-ready condition.

INTERIOR

Open this coupe's mile-wide doors and you'll find a fully restored interior that blends seamlessly with the car's bright blue paint! Low back bucket seats are supple, firm, and look every bit as nice and rich as our pictures imply. Between those seats, a molded console founds small power window switches behind a chrome shifter and Delco-GM stereo. That dash, seat and console trifecta is framed in fade-free carpet, pliable door panels and a tight headliner. In front of the driver, a black Formula steering wheel spins around a tilting column and stylish, engine-turned instrument panel. And behind the passengers, a carpeted trunk provides ample cargo space.
