Description

Ford Mustangs are great and all, but what’s a guy to do who doesn’t want the same car half a million of his closest friends have, but doesn’t have a huge pile of money to spend? How about a ROUSH Mustang Sport with a ton of high-quality performance upgrades like gears, intake, and pulleys? Great looks, a little extra horsepower, and an impeccable pedigree that almost guarantees future collectability, it’s all included as standard equipment with a ROUSH piece.

The 2006 ROUSH Ford Mustang Sport package included:

Custom front fascia with fog lampsRocker panelsRear valencesRear wingEmblemsROUSH banner on the windshield,High performance exhaust system with polished tipsEmbroidered floor mats

…all for the relatively reasonable price of $6201.00. The original buyer of this car wasn’t satisfied with that, however, and generously loaded up a few additional options on his new ROUSH Mustang including:

Silver racing stripes with front window decalROUSH Mustang Sport 2-tone leather seatsMustang white face gauge clusterROUSH Mustang front chin spoilerROUSH hood scoopROUSH Mustang rear quarter window louversROUSH aluminum manual pedal kitROUSH billet shift knobTrunk-mounted tool kitAll these goodies added another $4177.00 to the list price of his new Mustang. But wait! He wasn’t quite done. An extensive list of aftermarket upgrades were installed to give this pony a little more punch on the street. In the horsepower department, upgrades include Motive Performance Plus 3.90 Gears, BBK ceramic headers, SCT Xcalibrator 2 Strategy ECM flash, C and L True Flow intake kit with an 85mm mass-air sensor, a BBK twin 62mm throttle body, Motoblue 3-pulley kit, S&B Performance intake kit. Styling was enhanced with Classic Design Concepts Mustang sequential taillights, while handling was enhanced with a Swarr Bar 8.8 rear support system. For a little underhood flash, a number of dress-up parts were installed, including intake manifold and coil pack covers. For convenience, a hood lift kit was installed to get rid of the factory prop rod to really show off the beautifully finished engine compartment. And finally, since you can travel without your music, a satellite radio system was fitted. With just 21,460 miles on the odometer, this car is close to showroom-new throughout. Never intended as a daily driver, this car was a cherished collectible from day one, and has probably never seen anything more than a run-in with an automatic sprinkler system, let alone any inclement weather. The ROUSH body kit emphasizes the Mustang’s lean flanks, giving it an aggressive stance that was bred on the racetrack (since that’s where Jack Roush works). The black paint is outstanding, and compared to some of the late-80s cars we’ve had in here lately, you can see how far factory paint technology has come—it’s really, really nice. The ROUSH stripes were expertly applied and look sinister against the black paint, not cartoonish or excessive; it’s like the body was made to wear stripes.  The ROUSH-made parts, including the front and rear fascias and rocker panel moldings, look completely OEM and fit right without that aftermarket “close enough” vibe that you get from a lot of bolt-on kits (after all, ROUSH is an OEM supplier). There aren’t any nicks or stone chips on the ROUSH body panels (or the factory ones, for that matter), which suggests that this car was very gently used.Under the hood, the sturdy Ford 4.6 liter V8 churns out more than 300 horsepower thanks to 3-valve heads as well as the performance modifications. It was awesome that Ford engineers were able to take a completely new overhead cam engine with not one part interchangeable with the older pushrod V8s, but have it still sound like a Ford V8. Mustangs have always had a unique sound, and this one is no different. No rain or snow means all the aluminum bits are still clean, the plastic hasn’t faded, and there is no road grime anywhere.

The engine drives through a 5-speed manual transmission, which changes gears thanks to the positive action of the ROUSHshifter. Out back, a set of 3.90 gears replace the original 3.55s and provides stunning off-the-line acceleration, and makes the overdriven 5th gear more than useful on the highway. There are disc brakes at all four corners, and this car features anti-lock brakes and traction control as well. And although Ford kept the Mustang’s live axle, it isn’t a penalty anymore, because engineers have pretty much tamed its antics through careful suspension tuning. Of course, a big part of that are those gorgeous 18-inch chrome ROUSH wheels, a bold 5-spoke design that helps keep the brakes cool and the polished finish really pops off the black paint. The BFGoodrich performance radials are brand new and show almost zero wear today.

Inside, the interior is all Mustang, and with those upgraded ROUSH signature 2-tone seats and signature dashboard, it’s a great place to spend some time. Along with the comprehensive redesign of the body, the Mustang’s interior got a huge makeover as well, resulting in what many folks think of as the best interior ever in a Mustang, and I’m inclined to agree. With the power driver’s seat in this car, it’s incredibly easy to get comfortable, and the retro-styled dashboard is full of useful information. In this particular car, you’ll also note that white-faced gauges have been added, as well as Jack Roush’s signature that lights up with the rest of the gauges at night—a cool touch! The leather is in very good condition with only a few signs of use, and everything works as it should. Under your feet, you’ll find a set of ROUSH floor mats, and under the deck lid is the ROUSH signature tool kit, which almost qualifies as art.

Extensive paperwork comes with the car, including the original Ford window sticker and the additional ROUSH window sticker that includes the Sport package and related options. There is also a ROUSH Owner’s Manual and a whole pile of ROUSH promotional brochures and product catalogs. We also have the receipts for all the new parts that were installed.

There are plenty of Mustangs out there, but very few ROUSH-massaged pieces—this is one of only a handful of Sport Mustangs built in this configuration. Package cars like this are far more than the sum of their parts, with professional factory-type construction and components. Immaculately maintained with killer looks, a nice upgrade in performance and a great pedigree, this is a lot of Mustang for your money.
