BODYWORK/TRIM

It certainly grabs attention, raising eyebrows and turning heads wherever it's driven. That appeal begins with classic 3-box proportions, only to be elevated by appropriate Obsidian Black paint and dark-tint glass. Judging by its clean CarFax report, the small amount of road time this luxury heavyweight has seen was likely executed during drama-free weather. And the car's sculpted body displays precise fit and excellent finish under ancillary hardware that functions well and seals great.

Combining solid looking sheetmetal and classy trim with a buttoned down stance and acute detailing, this awesome 4-door takes traditional Mercedes aesthetics and stretches them around long wheelbase luxury. At the front of the car, a trademark, chrome-trimmed grille hangs a small Mercedes badge between LED headlamps, an old school hood ornament and an AMG-spec fascia that's equipped with sporty flics and a matte chrome splitter. Behind those flics, power, LED-lit mirrors reflect matte window trim, sculpted door handles, bright “V8 BI TURBO” emblems and aggressive, AMG-spec rockers. ENGINE

At the core of those good looks is a handcrafted M278 V8 that utilizes two turbos to twist 577 horsepower into 664 lb./ft. of torque. A modernized successor to the storied M273 V8, the M278 is founded on an aluminum block that's built with a 98mm bore, a 90.5mm stroke and Silitec low-friction cylinder liners. That machining technology is supplemented with increased pressure Direct Injection, multi-spark ignition technology, enhanced Variable Valve Timing and revised engine accessories that reduce parasitic loads. As is the trend these days, the entire engine is covered in clean plastic shrouds, which, in this sedan, appear 100% weather-free. That shrouding prominently features the name of the AMG professional who assembled the mill. And, engineered, assembled, covered and installed, the impressive powerplant hustles this relatively heavy sedan to 60 MPH in a spectacular 3.9 seconds.

DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION

Under the car, an AMG SPEEDSHIFT 7-speed multi-clutch transmission implements instant power while providing the driver a choice of an ECO mode that incorporates stop/start technology, or Sport and Manual modes that incorporate rev-matching technology. That transmission commands AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive, which combines a 33:67 torque split with torque-vectoring and ESP Curve Dynamic Assist. That all-wheel drive system rides on an AMG AIRMATIC Adaptive Sport Suspension that combines electronically controlled damping and 4-wheel automatic level control with Comfort and Sport modes. Power-assisted, AMG-spec calipers, 6-piston up front, squeeze 15.4 and 14.2-inch vented and drilled compound discs. There's an AMG-spec exhaust system that employs electronically controlled internal flaps to emphasize characteristic V8 acoustics at full throttle. And Rolling stock consists of attractive AMG alloys, which meet the road through two 255/40ZR20 Continental ContiSportContacts and two 285/35ZR20 Continental ContiSportContacts.

INTERIOR

Pop the doors and you'll find a luxurious black on black interior that features glossy Poplar trim and $4,450 of supple Napa leather. I'm guessing nobody has ever used the back seats, outboard units that are probably as comfortable as most people's recliners. And the front seats, stitched and perforated thrones which feature memory and lumbar support, show virtually no wear at all. In front of those chairs, a sculpted, leather-wrapped dash hangs bright digital telemetry between an optional Head-Up Display and ambient LEDs. At the base of that dash, an artful console balances striking lighting between AMG sills, aluminum foot pedals and fresh carpet that's protected by plush AMG mats. At the sides of the car, intricate door panels display a cool combination of wood, leather and aluminum. There's a panoramic sunroof, an audio-video system, a full Burmester sound system, navigation, Bluetooth, heated armrests, power EVERYTHING and pretty much any other neat option Mercedes could imagine. In front of the driver, a silver trimmed AMG steering wheel laps small paddle shifters. And behind the passengers, a large trunk provides ample storage space.
