More often than not, the sad thing about owning a documented collector car is that you have to lock it in a bubble and drive it with the haste of a Brass Era survivor. Because of an innate aversion to that sort of 'fine print', many enthusiasts are beginning to rethink the old purist's adage: “original is always better”. And hobbyists who actually enjoy driving their vintage hardware are beginning to buy slick, fully sorted classics like this lovingly upgraded Shelby GT350. Featuring a killer 347/5-speed drivetrain that's centered in an original, fully documented shell, this Mustang will make you the star of your own 1-car parade! Looking for some awesome muscle that can be shown AND cruised? When you experience this sweet Shelby, you won't even give the word “original” a second thought!

BODYWORK/TRIM

Shelby's famed GT line fueled the muscle car fire by introducing some of the coolest and most aggressive Mustang design cues ever created. And, mixing correct cosmetics with a killer stance, this registry-listed coupe definitely keeps the flames stoked. The product of a nut-and-bolt rotisserie restoration, the car's all-original sheetmetal was completely stripped and carefully reworked into a top-notch thoroughbred profile. Once that intense labor resulted in better than factory fit, original fiberglass was carefully smoothed and supplemented with a KR-style hood. Eventually, that metal and glass was coated in crisp Spies Hecker 2-stage, which hosts laser-straight callouts on a fantastic, mirror-like shine. And the result is one razor-sharp pony car that looks good, runs great and is ready to turn heads for years to come!

ENGINE

Hoist this Ford's lightweight bonnet and you'll find a 347 cubic inch small block that utilizes a SCAT crank, SCAT rods and proven Lunati cam to twist big compression into impressive, tire-shredding horsepower. At the top of the bright blue mill, a finned Cobra air cleaner funnels oxygen through a Holley 650 carburetor, which is sequenced to a coated fuel pump, 304 stainless fluid lines and a shock proof Marshall pressure gauge. A resulting air/fuel mixture makes its way from an Edelbrock Performer RPM intake to Airflow Research 185 heads, which hide 1.550 springs and Crane Gold Race rockers under a FoMoCo breather and Cobra-branded valve covers. When those heads flood the cylinders, an MSD Pro-Billet distributor sequences spark between fresh electricals, an Autolite coil and MSD Super Conductor plug wires. Spent gases roar through TIG welded, Jet-Hot coated Tri-Y headers. Cooling is provided by a Ron Davis Double Pass radiator, which rides in front of an Edelbrock water pump and two SPAL puller fans. A rebuilt alternator spins opposite a KRC power steering pump thanks to stylish billet pulleys. And overall, the car's smooth engine bay is exceptionally well done; featuring cool details like polished fluid reservoirs, a rebuilt brake booster, pliable Ford hoses and a tagged Autolite battery.

DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION

Since this Ford's first owner pampered his prized pony for close to 20 years, the car has remained exceptionally solid throughout its entire life. And under its clean, Oxide Red floors, the best virtues of classic Shelby Americana have been augmented with some of today's best technology. Behind the snarling small block, a tough Tremec TKO600 5-speed pairs an aluminum flywheel with a lightened, hydraulically actuated King Cobra clutch. That clutch jerks an aluminum driveshaft, which spins a proven Currie 9-inch that's fitted with 3.89 gears, a Truetrac differential and 31-spline, big bearing axles. That drivetrain pushes an upgraded leaf suspension, which complements Global West reverse eye springs with adjustable QA-1 shocks and Competition Engineering Slide-A-Link traction bars. Opposite that rear end, a Global West front-half hangs adjustable QA-1 coil-overs between tubular control arms and a large sway bar. Turns come courtesy of Total Control power rack-and-pinion steering. Braking is equally class, with a combination of Baer and Ford calipers utilizing 304 stainless piping to squeeze two 13-inch drilled and slotted rotors and two 12-inch drilled and slotted rotors. The aforementioned headers dump spent gases in to TIG welded, Jet-Hot coated 304 stainless pipes, which employ an X-shaped crossover, polished Magnaflow mufflers and polished stainless tips. Everything rolls on 17-inch Vintage Wheel Works V50s, which twist 235/45ZR17 BF Goodrich g-Force T/As up front and 255/45ZR17 BF Goodrich g-Force T/As out back. And items like a fresh fuel tank, a 7-quart Cobra oil pan and sturdy Global West subframe connectors round out a virtually picture perfect undercarriage.

INTERIOR

Open the door to this awesome Mustang and you'll find a fully restored cockpit that mixes the best elements of Ford's black vinyl interior with stylish Shelby add-ons. Front-and-center, highly bolstered buckets stretch tight vinyl covers under a tough roll bar and familiar shoulder belts. In front of those seats, an ornate, dual-cowl dash hangs an original pad over a factory Philco radio and clean factory telemetry. Below that dash, a correct console anchors a trick Pro-5.0 shifter between a cobra-branded armrest and Stewart Warner accessory gauges. In front of the driver, a wood-rimmed steering wheel laps a functional Tilt-Away Steering Column. And behind the passengers, a fully restored trunk hides a small fire extinguisher and compact spare tire.
