----------
Start talking Corvettes and the first generation Sting Ray is almost always directly referenced. Offered in two body styles, and equipped with engine options that spanned 100 cubic inches, the C2 was capable of satisfying nearly every gearhead that took interest. And that legacy of universal appeal has continued throughout the last 60 years, giving fans and aficionados the parts and inspiration to create their own unique hot rods. Take this '66 roadster for example. Updated with a modern engine and fresh interior components during an exhaustive, ground-up restoration, this tastefully modified Chevy turns a traditionally appealing platform into an off-the-charts super star. If you're ready to hit the streets in a fresh, head-turning sports car, check out this stunning Corvette resto-mod!
BODYWORK/TRIM
Sealed in brilliant DuPont Victory Red 2-stage, and topped with fresh Al Knoch vinyl, this slick Vette is the beneficiary of a comprehensive, ground-up restoration that was completed in the summer of 2015. After being stripped to bare fiberglass, the car's body was fitted with a fresh Eckler's nose clip and adjusted to near-perfect alignment. Those striking aesthetics were then massaged into a collection of flat surfaces that are much nicer than anything that rolled out of the factory. And the result is one seductive, fully sorted roadster that looks good on the road and great at the show!
When you think of Corvettes, “classy” usually isn't the first thing that comes to mind. It's not that America's sports car lacks class. It simply floods the conscious with far more appealing descriptors like fast, free and lust-worthy. After all, this C2 was built to lap tracks, not float through a stuffy regimen of teatimes. At the front of the car, bullet-style marker lights, a brilliant bumper and a prominent red, white and black cross-flag emblem cage a body-width, stainless-trimmed grille. At the sides of that grille, simple heat extractors ride between chrome door handles, ornate fender emblems and traditional, shielded side pipes. Opposite those pipes, a '66-exclusive hood leads the eye to new glass that's framed in polished wipers, fresh stainless trim and a classy bowtie mirror. And behind that mirror, two equally brilliant bumpers reflect a chrome-trimmed fuel filler, a clean “Corvette Sting Ray” emblem, a chrome-trimmed tag bracket and optional dual-mode taillights.
ENGINE
Tilt this Chevy's blistered hood and you'll find a mean Chevrolet Performance ZZ454 that utilizes a forged crank, forged rods, aluminum pistons and a hydraulic roller cam to turn stout 9.6 to 1 compression into 440 horsepower and an even 500 lb./ft. of torque. At the top of the smooth-spinning mill, a 780cfm Holley carburetor is sequenced between a polished air cleaner, a stainless throttle linkage and braided Summit fluid lines. That fuel source feeds a requisite aluminum intake and high-flow, oval-port cylinder heads, which are dressed in polished valve covers. At the back of that intake, Performance Distributors HEI ignition shoots spark through fresh MSD Street Fire plug wires. At the front of those wires, pliable V-belts spin a rebuilt alternator and cast iron water pump behind a big aluminum radiator that's paired with two SPAL puller fans. And exhaust makes haste through traditional, cast iron manifolds that frame a deep Moroso oil pan.
DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION
During its body-off restoration, the bottom of this Sting Ray was fitted with a roster of choice upgrades. GM's factory-spec frame serves as the perfect foundation for a tough Muncie 4-speed. That proven gearbox twists a correct Corvette axle, which spins a posi-traction differential around tough, 3.55 gears. That spry driveline rides a fully rebuilt suspension that frames adjustable QA-1 coil-overs in Van Steel control arms and Van Steel trailing arms. Power-assisted stops are provided by red Delco Moraine calipers, which clench four vented rotors. And torque meets the pavement through '60s-era American Racing Torq Thrusts, which spin 225/60R15 BF Goodrich Radial T/As.
INTERIOR
Inside the car, you'll find a fresh Corvette America interior that's clean, comfortable and ready to cruise. Plush seats hang large headrests over pleated covers that show no signs of significant wear. In front of those seats, a rebuilt dash hangs fresh knobs and all-new wiring over a modern, direct-fit radio. Under that dash, a small console centers a Hurst shifter on fade-free carpet and Chevrolet-branded floor mats. At the edge of that carpet, good-looking door panels trace pliable armrests with clean chrome handles and bright stainless trim. In front of the driver, a leather-wrapped steering wheel spins bright satin spokes around a cross-flag-branded horn button and a tilting Ididit column. And behind the passengers, a small cargo area features a fair amount of storage space.
