Wrapping a historic Hemi drivetrain in a tailored interior and 18 feet of stylish sheetmetal, this 1958 300D, one of only 809 produced, HAS to be one of the coolest classics on the planet! An optimal mix of lethal performance and opulent luxury, this Chrysler is a stunning example of some of the most revered metal Detroit has ever produced. And if you're a discerning collector who's itching for a classic, big-fin MoPar that'll be the star of every show it attends, it's your ticket to greatness!

BODYWORK/TRIM

The 300D's futuristic design helped mark the debut of Jet Age Detroit styling trends that would continue for several years. And, although Chrysler's aerodynamic ingenuity came in handy at Daytona Beach, where a fire breathing, 390 horsepower Hemi propelled the nearly identical 300C to a record 134 MPH, it was the firm's style quotient that sent the market into a frenzy. This D, a solid car that reflects bright PPG 2-stage, seems appropriately patriotic given its red, white and blue aesthetics. Those aesthetics are perfectly complemented by re-chromed, original bumpers and polished, original stainless that looks almost as good as the day it left the showroom. And despite what some might call exaggerated proportions and excessive brightwork, this graceful, Exner-era coupe is exceptionally striking and decidedly handsome.

ENGINE

During World War II, Chrysler conducted extensive research to better Republic Aviation's already lethal P-47 Thunderbolt. That work led to the now famous hemispherical combustion chamber that we all affectionately call “Hemi". And this car's 392 cubic inch Firepower Hemi is still regarded as a big block legend. The mill's induction is handled by snazzy gold air cleaners, which are piped directly in to two Lokar-controlled Carter 4-barrels. Fire is provided by a high performance points distributor, which sequences spark between a tagged Chrysler generator and eight pliable plug wires. Combustion comes courtesy of forged pistons, hydraulic lifters, hardened pushrods and a quality hydraulic roller camshaft that breathes through a high performance intake and low restriction exhaust manifolds. Aesthetically, the engine's fresh aluminum paint contrasts well against cool gold valve covers and the car's glossy blue fenders. And little details, like stainless lines, a MoPar battery, Autolite horns and a cool Jiffy Jet washer bag, provide tons of exciting eyeball appeal.

DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION

Not only was the 300D known for its big power, it was universally admired for its excellent handling. That on-track prowess was a direct result of the car's lower engine placement and precise spring location. In this hardtop, the low-slung powerplant communicates through a '60s-era A727 Torqueflite and '70s-era 8.75-inch Chrysler axle. That upgraded drivetrain rides a familiar torsion bar/leaf spring suspension, which mixes a '70s-era Cordoba front-clip with high quality PST sway bars and KYB Excel-G shock absorbers. At the corners of that suspension, power front disc and rear drum brakes ensure solid, fade-free stops. Those stops are directed by modern power steering, which makes good use of a rebuilt Firm Feel gearbox. At the center of the car's rust-free floors, a traditional true-dual exhaust system employs baritone turbo mufflers. And all this road-worthy hardware rolls on painted and capped wheels, which twist pliable 235/70R15 BF Goodrich Silvertown Radial whitewalls.

INTERIOR

Take a look inside this coupe and you'll find an elegant 2-tone interior that sports enough room to haul the whole family in comfort! Wide bench seats, power-operated for the front passengers, prop pliable vinyl covers under fresh lap belts. In front of those seats, a vivid dash hangs a crack-free pad over a modern Sony CD player and stylish, pushbutton transmission controls. At the sides of that dash, textured door panels frame factory power windows. In front of the driver, an original steering wheel spins a chrome horn ring around a patriotic 300 logo. And that dash, seat and wheel trifecta is framed in rich carpet, a fully restored trunk and a tight headliner that's stretched across polished roof bows.

The 300D represents a huge milestone in the development of the Chrysler Corporation as a powerhouse manufacturer. After tearing up the beaches in Daytona and shattering speed records at the firm's own Chelsea Proving Grounds, it single-handedly spawned the world-class performance image Chrysler's eponymous brand enjoyed well into the '70s. If you're a discerning gearhead who likes top-notch classics that draw crowds wherever they go, this all-American cruiser will be a significant addition to your collection!
