The beneficiary of a professional restoration that was completed in 2005, and thoroughly freshened in 2014, this slick Super Sport wraps smooth Tuxedo Black base in traditional Dover White stripes. Steal one glance down the sides of the car's rock-solid body and you'll find that great care was taken to ensure all seams are both narrow and precise. Step closer to the car's mirror-like paint and check out flat surfaces that are the product of both rust-free original sheetmetal and high quality replacement panels. Grab the car's well-adjusted hood and feel how smoothly it closes to provide an excellent fit that's set off by a glossy clearcoat sheen. And ultimately, it all adds up to one very well done classic that's ready to be the center of attention both on the road and at the show.
When it comes to purity of form, I really can't think of a better looking car than the first generation Camaro. It's a solid and straightforward design that continues to age exceptionally well, especially in the company of its exaggerated and extroverted competitors. At the front of this sinister F1, a chrome-trimmed grille hangs stylish Rally Sport headlights above a body-matched bumper, a custom valance and a traditional D80 chin spoiler. Above that grille, a ZL-2 cowl induction hood floats between a bright Camaro header emblem and fresh glass that's seated behind straight trim, mirrored wipers and a pliable vinyl roof. At the sides of that glass, familiar door handles and a correct chrome mirror combine with chrome wheel lips and dent-free rocker guards to frame modern “ZL1” emblems, stylish “rally sport” scripts and ornate quarter louvers. And at the back of the car, a guarded bumper splits a clean “Z/28” emblem, correct Rally Sport taillights and a familiar D80 deck spoiler.
As you probably already know, setting any kind of speed record takes some mighty impressive horsepower. Toss this Chevy's scooped hood and you'll find 496 cubic inches of turbocharged Donovan big block that's wedged inside a clean, professionally detailed engine bay. At the top of the aluminum mill, dual throttle bodies and a custom sheetmetal intake mix wind, sourced from custom, coated air tubes, with fuel that's supplied by direct-port injection. Under those injectors, Charcoal valve covers cap Dart CNC-ported aluminum heads, which back custom-plumbed 76mm Turbonetics turbochargers. All that high performance heat is kept in check by custom intercoolers and a custom aluminum radiator that's sandwiched between three electric fans. Spark begins at an MSD Pro-Billet distributor, sequences through Accel Ferro-Spiral Race Wires and, after igniting into 9 psi of boost, makes a quick exit through custom exhaust tubes. Naturally, that boost, currently restricted to make the best use of 93-octane pump gas, can be dialed up to accommodate much increased fuel compression. And aesthetically, details like a stainless firewall, braided fluid lines and conservative black fenders reinforce the idea that this coupe's build focused on performance instead of glitz.
That acute focus on ability carries right over, or should we say under, to this Chevy's full custom chassis. Behind the buff engine, a beefed up Turbo-Hydramatic 400 3-speed, complete with a custom torque converter and quality Gear Vendors overdrive, spins a Corvette-spec Dana 44 that's equipped with mild, 3.54 gears. Opposite that pumpkin, power rack-and-pinion steering keeps everything pointed straight. All that 'scoot and slide' hardware rides on a fully independent fourth generation Corvette suspension that backs a giant sway bar and aluminum control arms with Hyperco springs and QA-1 shocks. Stops come courtesy of 6-piston Wilwood calipers, which clamp 14-inch drilled and slotted rotors. Charred fossils float from the aforementioned tubes to a large-diameter, mandrel-bent exhaust system that hangs polished mufflers in front of polished turndowns. Power meets the pavement through 1-off Colorado Customs, which spin 255/35ZR18 Nitto NT555 Extreme ZRs in front of 295/45ZR18 Nitto NT555 Extreme ZRs. And the car's solid floors, which have been coated in traditional Satin Black paint, feature a full array of finishing components that includes braided fluid lines, a TM transmission pan and a big Moroso oil pan.
Open this F1's doors and you'll find a stylish Black Houndstooth interior that's been restored, upgraded and wrapped in a full roll cage. At the center of the car, vinyl-trimmed bench and Deluxe bucket seats feature sturdy RJS lap belts for the driver and front passenger. In front of those seats, a good looking dash complements rebuilt factory telemetry with a small Auto Meter boost gauge and modern Alpine audio. At the base of that dash, a '69 Camaro console founds a factory horseshoe shifter and familiar Auto Meter accessory gauges on like-new carpet. Opposite that console, stitched Deluxe door panels hang traditional hardware between small tweeters and big kick speakers. In front of the driver, a reproduction Rally Wheel laps a red, white and blue horn button. Behind the passengers, a custom package tray balances crisp Memphis Car Audio speakers at the sides of a rockin' Memphis Car Audio subwoofer. And behind the cockpit, a coated trunk founds a Fuel Safe fuel cell and small Weldon pump between billet-secured Optima batteries.
