If you're a Ford fan, you've undoubtedly noticed the plethora of high quality Mustangs we've featured over the past few months. From our "SAAC Gold GT500 convertible":http://www.rkmotors.com/sales/inventory/active#!/1968-Ford-Shelby-Mustang-GT500/135354 to the "1 of 16 Super Snake Pace Car":http://www.rkmotors.com/sales/inventory/active#!/2007-Ford-Shelby-Mustang-GT500-Super-Snake-Pace-Car/135281 RK Motors Charlotte is working hard to continue our reign as the number one source for top-notch pony cars. You might be thinking: that's all well and good, but what about the enthusiast who wants a cool car they can actually drive and enjoy? Well, for those folks, we have awesome offerings like this 1965 Shelby GT350-H tribute. With solid, traditional aesthetics, a spry 289/4-speed drivetrain and a freshly restored interior, this coupe is an excellent way to enjoy all aspects of the classic car hobby!

BODYWORK/TRIM

Beginning life as a solid Mustang fastback, this classic proved a fine starting point for building a detailed Hertz Rent-A-Racer. The car's restoration no doubt began with hours of massaging vintage panels into a straight, wave-free canvas. Once that intense labor resulted in good fit and finish, smooth and glossy pigment was streaked with metallic stripes, accented with correctly stenciled “G.T. 350 H” call-outs and sealed in durable clear. And today, this coupe rolls as one very convincing tribute that mixes classic Ford design with storied Shelby performance.

Back in the day, Ford designers made sure every year of the first generation Mustang had plenty of visual sizzle. And in the 21st century, it doesn't get much better than this Shelby's classy combination of correct accents and professionally placed trim. At the front of the car, a bright grille centers a patriotic Mustang emblem between halogen headlights, chrome-trimmed parking lamps and a mirrored bumper. Behind that grille, a pinned hood anchors a small scoop in front of polished windshield wipers, tinted greenhouse glass and polished stainless frames. At the sides of the car, polished bullet mirrors reflect plexi quarter windows, traditional door handles and aggressive quarter scoops. And behind those scoops, a second mirrored bumper frames clean taillights, a GT350 fuel filler, a small “G.T. 350” emblem and polished exhaust tips.

ENGINE

With the car's body finished, and the rest of the project well underway, it was time to find suitable motivation. Given this Mustang's predisposition to both class and muscle, it seemed logical to stay with proven Ford power. Pull the pins and you'll find a fresh, 289 cubic inch small block that provides plenty of spirited performance. The mean mill's energy mixture is supplied by a coated Holley carburetor, which is sandwiched between a Ford intake and a polished, correctly decaled air cleaner. That mixture travels in to cast iron heads, which hang finned valve covers under polished breathers. Fire for those heads comes courtesy of an MSD Blaster 2 coil, modern electronic ignition and 7mm Hi Temp Silicon wires. That fire is kept in check by a factory-spec radiator, which is centered on a big pulley fan. Speaking of pulleys, traditional pulleys spin a modern alternator opposite a vintage power steering pump. And details, like correct bracing, a tagged Autolite battery, restored exhaust manifolds and a correct Autolite washer bag, ensure the engine is both functional and attractive.

DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION

Take a look at our professional, high-resolution photos and you'll see that the bottom of this fully sorted pony is a literal expose in well-preserved componentry. Behind the car's first-class Ford block, a tough Toploader 4-speed drives a durable Ford 9-inch. Holding that versatile drivetrain off the ground is a lucid factory suspension, which features a sturdy rear sway bar. Above that suspension, solid, Satin Black floorpans show absolutely no signs of severe rust or weathering. At the center of those floors, free breathing, true-dual pipes shuttle spent gases through an X-shaped crossover and welded, dual-chamber mufflers. At the front of those pipes, power rack-and-pinion steering makes the best of turns. At the corners of the car, power-assisted discs make quick stops an absolute cinch. And everything rolls on chrome Magnum 500s, which spin a quartet of 225/60R15 Toyo Extensa A/S.

INTERIOR

Open the door to this well-done Mustang and you'll find a fully restored cockpit that provides an exceptionally attractive driving environment. There's a folding bench seat that rides just behind requisite bucket seats. The monochromatic dash centers a direct-fit cassette deck beneath a familiar Shelby Tac. A chrome Hurst shifter surfs fresh carpet that's protected by pony-branded floor mats. Factory door panels and a tight headliner frame that carpet. In front of the driver, a polished and wood-rimmed Shelby steering wheel laps a polished, tilting column. And behind the passengers, a completely restored trunk balances a full-size spare tire on a correct mat.

The true beauty of a tribute car is that it can be anything you want it to be. Love Shelby lines, but want a little more substance? Looking for a classic that'll wow crowds AND tear up the back roads? Here it is, no compromises, no disclaimers and no excuses!
