----------

If you've paid close attention to BMW over the years, you know that niche automaker Alpina is just as well regarded and sometimes faster to market than Munich's own M offerings. And few cars, let alone M trims, can provide the same mix of performance and luxury as this 2012 Alpina B7. Introduced in 2011 as a large, low-revving alternative to BMW's in-house performance models, the F01 Alpina mixes enhanced driving attributes with more technology than most modern battleships. And, over the course of two generations, the car has built quite a reputation on athletic road manners. Dressed in appropriate Alpine White, this B7 is an exclusive example of the cool line-topper so many BMW enthusiasts have grown to love. And, if you've been shopping for a sophisticated executive cruiser that features unmatched comfort and performance, it's the value of the year!

BODYWORK/TRIM

The F01 7 Series' appearance was a joint effort between Karim Habib and BMW Chief Designer Adrian van Hooydonk. And since the B7 is primarily produced on the same line as regular 7 sedans, Alpina's tweaks are sleek and straightforward. The front remains pure BMW, with chrome kidney grilles framed in Dynamic Xenon headlamps, larger cooling ducts and a subtle Alpina splitter. The side profile extends a straight line from the edge of those headlamps all the way back to LED taillights. Chrome-trimmed door handles anchor muted greenhouse trim while polished xDrive emblems frame slim marker lamps. At the back of the car, the aforementioned tails center trademark light tubes on a chrome-trimmed trunk that's adorned with “ALPINA” and “B7” lettering. Those adornments float between a subtle deck spoiler and revised bumper cover that's pierced by polished quad-outlet exhaust. And overall, this stately sedan presents crisp, blemish-free aesthetics, which are draped in the kind of excellent fit and finish that's so closely associated with the world's top-tier luxury cars.

ENGINE/DRIVETRAIN

Since BMW doesn't create M versions of the 7 Series, the F01's performance crown is officially carried by the 760Li. However, if you want exclusivity AND top-option performance, Alpina's B7 is the ride of choice. F01 7 Series motivation is provided by a stout 4.4 liter twin turbo V8 that twists 400 horsepower into 450 lb./ft. of torque. A modernized successor to the naturally aspirated N62 V8, the N63 actually reverses the traditional placement of intake and exhaust manifolds to optimize packaging and power for the aforementioned turbochargers. Naturally, Alpina takes that excellent foundation and adds a roster of improvements that includes: high performance pistons, reinforced cylinder heads, bigger turbos, better cooling and massaged software. All those tweaks add up to 14.5 psi of boost, an even 500 horsepower and 516 lb./ft. of smooth torque. And that kind of thrust is good enough to propel this relatively heavy sedan to impressive 4.4 second 0-60 sprints!

Behind the engine, a reinforced Steptronic 6-speed monitors a variety of parameters in order to best adapt to the owner's preferred driving style. The car's stiffened and lowered chassis is equally sophisticated, featuring finer calibrations to BMW's Dynamic Stability Control and Dynamic Traction Control. Dynamic Braking Control clamps down on BMW's largest electronically proportioned 4-wheel ventilated discs. Steering is fully adaptive, thanks to its speed-sensitive, variable-assist, variable-ratio power rack-and-pinion setup. Rolling stock consists of 21-inch Alpina alloys, which meet the road through 245/35ZR21 and 285/30ZR21 Pirelli P Zero Neros. And all these systems pair with an aluminum double-pivot strut-type front suspension, a multi-link integral rear suspension and xDrive all-wheel drive to create a motoring experience that's worthy of the tagline “Ultimate Driving Machine”.

INTERIOR

Pop the doors and this B7 offers all the luxury you've come to expect from a premium European automaker. The Black leather interior is accented by large expanses of Piano Black trim, which can be found on the dash, center console and door panels. The front features accommodations for two on heated bucket seats, while a large standard seat fills the rear. Between those seats, a well-dressed console anchors iDrive infotainment: a central computer system that initiates things such as climate, audio and navigation from a single location. From the driver's seat, an Alpina gauge cluster mixes plainspoken telemetry with attractive orange lighting. In front of those instruments, control of the front wheels is granted through a hand-stitched Lavalina leather steering wheel, which spins an Alpina centerpiece around a power tilt/telescopic column. Above the driver, a large sunroof brings the outdoors inside. And behind the passengers, a cavernous trunk makes the car ideally suited for extended travel.

The BMW 7 Series has always had an authoritative presence. Alpina took that presence and enhanced it into a car that everyone stops and notices. Powerful, inviting, and worthy of the word “flagship”, it's difficult to think of a more comfortable road trip car. If you love the world class luxury of the F01, but want something that puts equal emphasis on performance, here's your opportunity to have the best of both worlds. After all, even gearheads deserve a little pampering!
