Description

During the late 60's Oldsmobile bypassed GM's large engines in intermediate cars ban by allowing Hurst to 'assemble' models of their Cutlass line that housed the mighty 455 Rocket V8. Only 913 Hurst/Olds were built in 1969, making them often duplicated and highly desirable collector cars. This 1969 Hurst/Olds tribute is an extremely well done car that features a correct 455 and is priced at about a third of what it would take to build something like this from the ground up.

A 2007 nut and bolt rotisserie restoration started with a 1969 Oldsmobile Cutlass and, using correct colors and details, professionally transformed it into the fine tribute you see here. The body work is straight and well done exhibiting no defects and narrow panel gaps that provide excellent fit and functionality for the hood, trunk and doors. The straight and clean body was covered with a basecoat/clearcoat finish that includes correct Cameo White under correct Firefrost Gold stripes that have been professionally trimmed in black, just as the original Hurst/Olds were. The cars finish is excellent with the Cameo White paint still showing an excellent gloss and the Firefrost Gold paint still retaining its original luster. A bright chrome bumper houses clear marker lights and occupies the entire lower front valence of the car. Nice looking stainless trim borders grilles borrowed from the 442, which have been completely blacked out just as they were on original '69 Hurst/Olds. Four round T3 headlights look clear and function well at the edges of the grilles while in the middle of the grilles a Firefrost gold stripe with its surrounding black accents starts where the bumper meets the center of the nose and runs to the top center of the 'mail box' hood scoop. This cars 'mail box' hood scoop is a correct replica of those found on actual Hurst/Olds and features correct reproduction “H/O 455” decals on each of its flanks. The cars sporty profile is emphasized by one gold stripe that runs the entire length of the car on its rocker panels and another that follows the fender line up around the window to meet with show worthy chrome drip rails. New stainless trim lines the fender openings and correct “Hurts/Olds” emblems sit right behind the front wheels and mirror larger “Hurst/Olds” decals that are correctly positioned on the car's rear quarters. Well maintained stainless borders like new glass all the way around the car and complements chrome cowl vents and door handles that are in great shape. Complementing those door handles are Hurst/Olds exclusive english racing mirrors and cool rear marker lights that are formed in the shape of an Oldsmobile logo. The rear valence is occupied by another bright chrome bumper which sits below correct dual “Hurst/Olds” trunk emblems and a tall decklid spoiler that is trimmed at each end with Firefrost Gold and black pin stripes.

Mechanically, this car is completely read to go. The engine is a correct code 396021F 455 Oldsmobile Rocket block that sounds meaner than most of the cars in our RK Motors showroom and looks fantastic in the cars Cameo White and satin black engine bay. Turn the key and a Demon carburetor sucks air through a new correctly decaled chrome air cleaner and feeds fuel from stainless lines into to an Edelbrock Performer Oldsmobile 455 aluminum intake. Behind the Demon carburetor, an HEI distributor feeds fire through Taylor wires which are loomed around pristine chrome valve covers. Below those valve covers, ceramic coated long tube headers send exhaust out through a true dual exhaust system. Someone paid close attention to the details during this cars restoration as the Cameo White body panels mesh seamlessly with the satin black engine bay and contrast well to the orange engine block and silver accessories. Correct GM hoses and new belts snake around the silver intake to the factory air conditioning and into a correct radiator. The right side of the engine bay is mostly occupied by the factory air conditioning and the left side of the engine bay houses the cars power steering and power brake booster. This engine flat out rocks; it's all day reliable with massive big block power from one of the largest and most powerful engines ever created.

The bottom of the car has been over restored to include glossy and spotless Cameo white on the floor board that contrasts brilliantly with a satin black frame and drive line that are in excellent shape. Even the wheel wells still retain their glossy white finish and hint that the car probably hasn't seen many rainy days or unpaved roads. In the front a nicely painted factory correct double A-arm suspension holds coils and shocks that have seen little use since the 2007 rotisserie restoration. In the rear, an original equipment triangulated four link suspension houses correct leaf springs that hold a 12 bolt limited slip rear end and sit in front of a fuel tank that was replaced during the 2007 restoration. Braking is provided by correct power drums all around and turning is aided by factory correct power steering. A Turbo-Hydramatic 350 3-speed transmission sends power to the rear wheels while exhaust flows out of the long tube ceramic headers into a true dual system complete with a crossover and Flowmaster mufflers. At each corner of the car, 14 inch Oldsmobile stamped style 2 wheels are painted in Firefrost Gold, trimmed in chrome and feature chrome trim rings, chrome lug nuts and chrome center caps with red Oldsmobile rocket logos. Wrapped around those SS2 wheels is reliable 225/70/14 BF Goodrich radials.

Inside the car, you'll find a nicely restored black vinyl interior that is both comfortable and appealing. New vinyl seats sit on new sound deadening insulation and new carpet that is protected by new mats. Front and rear door panels feature the same pattern as the seats and are decorated with great looking chrome and stainless trim pieces. A factory correct short console features wood grain applique and houses a dual gate chrome Hurst shifter for the cars TH350. The dash pad shows no signs of sun damage, housing the cars gauge cluster and chrome vents for the heat and air conditioning. The lower dash is trimmed in stainless and houses a correct Oldsmobile AM radio with a courtesy light above the knobs and controls for the heat and air conditioning. On the passenger's side of the dash you'll find a correct Hurst/Olds logo attached to the locking glove box and in front of the driver, a four spoke satin finished steering wheel features a red Oldsmobile rocket logo. The trunk has been correctly restored with spatter paint and includes a new mat, a spare BF Goodrich radial, a correct decal with instructions on how to store the jack, a correct decal for operating the jack and a correct warning decal for the limited slip rear end.

Documentation for this car includes photos of the restoration, some extra under hood and inner trunk decals and some receipts for maintenance performed since the restoration.

In summary, this 1969 Hurst/Olds tribute is a phenomenal car that could not be reproduced for three times the asking price. The correct Oldsmobile Rocket 455 will cruise effortlessly at will and the car is ready to go to the local cruise night or show and bring home serious trophies. Instant gratification is a great thing, especially when you can spend a third of the money and drive a complete car out of our showroom the next day. Call today!
