----------

The great thing about vintage Pontiacs, well, besides the fact that they are vintage Pontiacs, is the fact that Pontiac Historic Services can confirm the provenance of almost every one of them. No other mass-market brand, aside from maybe Ford and their beloved Mustang, maintained such detailed factory records. And that means: when we tell you a car like this rotisserie-restored showstopper is an authentic Detroit antihero, we have the paperwork to back it up. Scoring Gold honors in the Concours Modified class at the 2014 GTO Association of America International Convention, this stunning hardtop mixes a stout, numbers-matching drivetrain with correct Mariner Turquoise and Black aesthetics. And if you're a wise enthusiast who's looking for an impressive classic that'll roll straight out of the showroom and right on to the show field, it's your chance to grab a tiger by the tail!

BODYWORK/TRIM

Owned by one family for the first 34 years of its life, this award-winning A-Body is the beneficiary of a ground-up, rotisserie restoration that was completed in June of 2014. The car's clean and solid profile, an essentially rust-free shell that needed very little repair, wears a rich coat of correct Mariner Turquoise 2-stage that, according to the current owner, has seen less than 10 miles of road time. And, as is the case with most successful Concours cars, trim and ornamentation are exactly as the factory specified. At the front of this Pontiac's body, a flashy dual-port grille founds ornate parking lamps and a prominent “GTO” emblem between a fresh bumper and stacked T3 headlights. At the top of the car, a broad hood centers a small scoop and monochromatic arrowhead in front of fresh glass that's framed in straight stainless, mirrored wipers and correct Black vinyl. At the sides of the car, flowing pinstripes and sporty GTO emblems add a little class, while traditional door handles and a polished mirror perfectly complement requisite wheel lips and dent-free rocker moldings. And out back, a stainless-trimmed valance hangs louver-style taillights between and a fourth “GTO” emblem and a second bumper that's finished with clear reverse lamps.

ENGINE

Pop the hood and the first thing you'll notice is a 400 cubic inch Pontiac V8 that, according to the car's current owner, was completely rebuilt and compression tested prior to the 2014 restoration. Less obvious, of course, is that stalwart mill's correct 9786133 casting number, May (E) 12th (12), 1967 (7) casting date and 360 horsepower, TH400-exclusive “YZ” assembly stamp. At the top of the block, a correct Rochester Quadrajet, rebuilt in 2013 by Custom Rebuilt Carburetors of Easton, Maryland, bridges the gap between a polished air cleaner, bright stainless fluid lines and a correct, cast iron intake. That intake rides between correct heads, which hang a familiar AC breather and attractive valve covers over fully restored exhaust manifolds. A factory-style distributor sequences spark between pliable plug wires and modern Pertronix ignition. Cooling is provided by a heavy duty Harrison radiator, which sends water around a correct fan via GM-branded hoses and traditional tower clamps. Charge comes courtesy of a rebuilt Delco alternator and modern, Delco-topped battery. And aesthetically, the impressive engine bay is fully detailed, from its correct tags and vivid decals all the way to its fresh grease marks and thick Turquoise block skin.

DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION

Sandblasted all the way to bare metal during the extensive rebuild, this goat's spotless floors and straight frame are completely free of significant issues and major defects. The stout small block sends power to a stalwart Turbo-Hydramatic 400 transmission that was professionally rebuilt by Parks Transmission of Charlotte Hall, Maryland in late 2013. That proven gearbox, cased behind a correct “PX - 67“ assembly tag, spins power to a tough GM 10-bolt that's fitted with a correct Safe-T-Track differential and fun, 3.55 gears. At the sides of that rock-solid drivetrain, aluminized, true-dual exhaust pipes connect the aforementioned manifolds with Flowmaster dual-chamber mufflers. At the sides of that booming soundtrack, a rebuilt and tagged suspension is complete with factory power steering and upgraded power front disc and rear drum brakes. Muscle meets the pavement through chrome Rally IIs, which spin 215/70R15 and 235/70R15 BF Goodrich Radial T/As around red-tinged lug nuts and PMD center caps. And absolutely everything, from this Poncho's stainless fluid lines to its high-torque starter, is fully sorted and ready to show!

INTERIOR

Open this coupe's doors and you'll find a correct GM code 223 Black interior that's simple yet sporty. Front and center, firm bench and bucket seats wrap bright chrome trim around original covers. Those hides look great next to a fresh, wood-trimmed dash, which integrates upgraded telemetry and a converted AM/FM radio above a bright Auto Gage accessory pod. On the floors, new carpet anchors a simple Hurst shifter and stylish, wood-trimmed console between thick, Pontiac-themed floor mats and classy, Fisher-themed sills. At the sides of the car, fresh door panels hang new chrome handles under straight trim and brilliant GTO insignias. In front of the driver, a Custom Sport Steering Wheel spins a faux wood rim around a Teal, Pontiac-branded horn button. And behind the passengers, a clean trunk sandwiches a correct jack and full-size spare tire between a standard mat and requisite decklid decal.
