----------

There's no doubting the F1 Camaro's significance in the collector car world. Like the '57 Bel Air and C2 Corvette, first generation F-Bodies are considered one of the all-time great Chevrolet classics. That said, the popularity of second generation Camaros is certainly growing. Ask any young enthusiast what their favorite year panther is and you're just as likely to hear “1970” “1973” or “1980” as “1967”, “1968” or “1969”. But here's the kicker: at this point in time, there simply aren't that many really nice F2s on the market. And that's why it's a great idea to get ahead of the curve by investing a little money in this striking Z28. Sporting a correct 350/4-speed drivetrain and incredible Red Orange over Black aesthetics, this Z is a vision of opportunistic '80s performance. And, as a well maintained cruiser that's benefitted from a detailed, ground-up restoration, it's a solid piece of classic car potential that's available for relatively modest money!

BODYWORK/TRIM

During its thorough, frame-off restoration, this solid coupe was entirely disassembled and carefully stripped of its dull, original lacquer. Once that prep was complete, an incredibly straight fuselage was augmented with a bit of fresh sheetmetal. As that massaged profile featured better-than-factory alignment, a correct coat of Red Orange 2-stage was buffed to a spectacular shine. When that pigment dried, era-correct call-outs highlighted an awesome trifecta of Red, Dark Orange and Light Orange stripes. And today, one close look at our high resolution photos reveals a handsome payoff in the form of one of the coolest Chevrolet muscle cars on the planet!

General Motors envisioned the second generation Camaro as a working man's Ferrari and, thanks to a better timeframe and bigger budget, effectively addressed many of the complaints enthusiasts had about the F1. Longer, wider, lower to the ground and more aggressive, the 'hugger' was certainly more of a driver's car, and is widely regarded as some of the best iron Detroit ever produced. At the front of this coupe, a slick urethane fascia centers a new-for-1980, “Z28” branded grille between black bucket headlights, ornate parking lamps and a familiar chin spoiler. Behind that fascia, a vast hood anchors a long scoop in front of fresh glass, correct T-tops and a combination of painted and polished stainless. At the sides of that hood, a clean fuselage hangs polished door handles and body-matched sport mirrors between new-for-1980 fender vents and small wheel spoilers. And at the back of that fuselage, a requisite ducktail shades bare exhaust pipes, a second urethane fascia, a small “Z28” badge and tri-color, 1980-spec tail lamps.

ENGINE

Tilt this Chevy's glossy hood and you'll find a 350 cubic inch Chevrolet V8 that proudly displays a correct 14010209 casting number. The car's big Quadrajet carburetor, sealed to a single-snorkel, cowl induction air cleaner, funnels life in to a correct, cast iron intake. At the sides of that intake, correct heads hang stamped and painted valve covers over correct, cast iron exhaust manifolds. Behind those manifolds, a marked distributor sequences fire through Packard Premium High Energy RFI Suppression cables. And in front of those cables, a dressed and decaled radiator circulates coolant through pliable hoses and modern screw clamps. In addition to its killer powerplant, this Camaro offers a thoroughly detailed engine bay that's complete with an old school Delco Air compressor, a fresh brake booster, a rebuilt Delco Remy alternator, correct Harrison firewall components and a modern AC Delco battery. And the car's first-rate aesthetics, which mix smooth, Satin Black framing with a vivid GM Corporate Blue core, create great texture and excellent contrast.

DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION

In 1980, the only transmission you wanted in your Z28 was a tough Borg Warner Super T10 4-speed, and that's exactly what lives behind this car's stout small block. Naturally, that gear slinger centers a correct 13-04-065-904 casting number in front of a 1979 assembly date. There's a correct 10-bolt rear end that's equipped with highway friendly gears. That driveline hangs in a correct F41 Sport Suspension, which combines correct power steering with correct power front disc and rear drum brakes. That suspension is dissected by a beefy, Mandrel-bent exhaust system, which centers an H-shaped crossover in front of a correct transverse muffler. That exhaust system is framed by solid, floors that are dressed in traditional Satin Black paint. And those floors roll on striking Red Orange Rally Wheels, which spin 225/70R15 Cooper Cobra Radial GTs around dent-free trim rings and “Z28” branded center caps.

INTERIOR

Open the car's long doors and you'll find a correct Standard interior that's been restored to factory specifications. A quartet of vinyl buckets is free of significant wear. In front of those seats, a silver-trimmed dash hangs a correct Delco-GM tape deck under a full array of rebuilt telemetry. At the bottom of that dash, a correct console centers a chrome shifter on fade-free carpet that's protected by color-keyed floor mats. Opposite that console, 1-piece door panels found chrome hardware in straight, stainless trim. The driver stays connected through a familiar 4-spoke steering wheel, which laps a small “Z28” emblem. And passengers haul cargo next to a correct space saver spare tire in a fully restored trunk.
