If you've been watching C2 Corvette prices lately, you know that even the small block cars are becoming hot collectibles. Sure, everyone wants a 427 with a stinger hood, or an early Z06, but for real-world collectors and people who actually enjoy driving their machines, it's getting hard to find strong, small-block cars. And if you want a roadster, expect a hefty premium. On the other hand, take a good, long look at this Riverside Red 1964 Corvette and its price tag. It packs its healthy and original 327/4-speed drivetrain, it's been awarded NCRS Top Flight three times, and has been under the care of a single owner since 1969. If you're hoping to join the collector car market with a car that carries pedigree, but not the premium of trailer queen specimens, this roadster demands your full attention!
Red Corvettes are literally the stuff dreams are made of and this '64 Corvette is the epitome of classic American motoring. Wrapped in a factory-correct hue of Code 923 Riverside Red, the paint job was re-sprayed many years ago, but meticulous care by the same owner of nearly 50 years has helped it age well. The chrome bumpers and emblems present well to be original pieces and everything lines up as it should to be a straight, accident-free body. That red coat did see a respray circa 1980, and for a paint job that is over 35 years old it still has a notable gloss. A matching auxiliary hardtop was ordered with the car and is included with our sale. It appears to be a solid piece that latches down very firmly to keep the cabin a pleasant atmosphere no matter the outside environment. And for the days when quick cover is needed, a folding black soft top has a proper fit and shows no signs of abuse or neglect. Overall, it's impressive to imagine this car has survived over 50 years without showing any necessary signs of a full reboot.
Power for this sweet roadster comes from a 300 horsepower 327 cubic inch V8 that remains original to the car. The long-term older was sure to give it proper service and maintenance, and some time around 1980 the numbers-matching engine went through a full re-build. In 1986, this car was even awarded the NCRS Performance Verification Award. Since then the car seems to start and idle with confidence. All of the correct ancillary components are present while hoses and belts show in good condition. A single 4-barrel Carter carburetor feeds a GM intake manifold while the engine breathes through correct exhaust manifolds. In fact, the only item that appears to be out of factory specification is the modern battery. Everything else appears to be factory-spec and exhibits a vintage display that you'll still be happy to show off.
Looking around the undercarriage, things appear largely original. As often as these cars are restored (and often over-restored), that's a refreshing sight. The fiberglass pans are just as solid underneath as they are up top and display their original finish with pride. In the center, a Muncie 4-speed manual transmission has been chosen to handle shifting duties. Around the drivetrain, the suspension remains stock with the standard double A-arm front with radius rods and a transverse leaf spring around a posi-traction rear with 3.36 gears. When the road gets twisty, manual steering provides direct feedback, while four-wheel drum brakes do an impressive job with reining in the small block. At the corners, 15-inch wheels with full covers meet the road through 205/70R15 BF Goodrich Premier radials.
Open the doors to a black interior that continues the original theme. It's a familiar cockpit to any Corvette enthusiast and all of the gauges and patterns remain in stock form. The black vinyl shows minimal wear for a car of this vintage, and those buckets sit on top of the original carpet. The original center console frames a chrome shifter for the 4-speed that sits below an AM/FM radio. A dual cowl dash remains straight and crack-free with all of the gauges present. Flanked by straight door panels is the wood rim 3-spoke steering wheel.
