Flashy muscle cars are fun, and polished cruisers are nice, but there's really nothing cooler than a well-done sleeper. No gimmicks, no frills and no posturing; just presence and power -- LOTS of power. This exceptionally clean Chevelle 300 is a subdued stunner that mixes 5.7 liters of Corvette V8 with a modern driveline, thoroughly updated chassis components and ultra conservative aesthetics. And if you're looking for a unique classic that's road ready, show-ready and just plain battle-ready, it's the perfect way to prowl the scene and bruise a few egos!
Featured in the February, 2009 edition of Chevy High Performance Magazine, this sublime sedan is an intentionally low-key take on the fundamentals of every hard-edged muscle car: tough looks, sturdy components, reduced weight and tons of power! The car's body-off restoration, which wrapped in the Spring of 2007, began with a rust-free shell that was subjected to complete disassembly and a full chemical strip. Once that profile was clean and ready to work, the pros at Dulles, Virginia's Ultimate Performance Company whipped up smooth PPG 2-stage that reflects as Corvette Artic White pigment. When that pigment dried, custom badging and trick bowtie mirrors complemented new chrome and tinted glass. And, roughly $93K later, this Chevy hit the road as a top-notch resto-mod that's clean, reliable and acutely focused.
Take a look under the hood and you'll find 5.7 liters of stout LS1 small block that's good for 350 horsepower! Cribbed directly from a 2000 Corvette, that proven mill combines a sturdy aluminum block with lightweight aluminum heads, coil-near-plug ignition and aluminum flat top pistons to create razor-sharp throttle response and a torque band that's as wide as Texas. At the front of the engine, a long air tube funnels wind from a big K&N filter that's seated in a custom-built isolation box. At the end of that tube, a fourth-generation Camaro throttle body feeds a composite intake, which caps completely stock internals. High-octane fossils are provided by electronic fuel injection, which employs a quality Aeromotive regulator beneath a liquid-filled Auto Gage pressure gauge. Sparks are sequenced through fresh MSD plug wires. Spent gases roar through shielded Hummer H2 manifolds. Cooling comes courtesy of a custom 4-core radiator, which seats a custom shroud and built-in transmission cooler in front of a powdercoated expansion tank and 16-inch SPAL puller fan. And GM serpentine components spin an AC Delco alternator opposite a low-mount AC compressor. Aesthetically, both the Cast Silver mill and its assortment of bright accessories seem right at home inside their conservative, Satin Black frame. And details like braided fluid lines, a fresh Optima battery, bright rail covers and a powdercoated power steering cooler ensure this Chevy has a steady balance of looks and performance.
Weighing in at roughly 3,100 pounds, this Chevy is light enough to perform while being strong enough to endure. Like its body, the car's floors and frame were subjected to a full regimen of restoration that included thorough sandblasting, 3M undercoating and professional powder-coating. The LS1 spins a proven 4L60E 4-speed that was sourced from a 1999 Camaro. That gearbox twists an Eaton Truetrac differential around Richmond 3.91 gears. That drivetrain pushes a Moser M9 housing on QA-1 shocks and 1-inch lowering springs, which float between a 1-inch sway bar, and fixed and adjustable Global West control arms. Opposite that clip, more QA-1 shocks and 1-inch lowering springs float between a second sway bar, Global West G-Plus control arms and a full suite of polyurethane bushings. Stops come quickly thanks to a familiar Delco Moraine booster, which jolts two Baer calipers, two PBR calipers and a 13-inch slotted rotors. Turns are sharp thanks to a Flaming River power steering box, which is aided by a collapsible shaft, Borgeson joints and a fifth-generation Corvette pump. Fuel floods the engine thanks to a Walbro 225 lb./hr. pump, which charges custom-bent stainless lines that are dressed in quality AN fittings. Spent gases are managed by 2.5-inch, coated tubes, which center a custom H-pipe between fifth-generation Corvette cats and throaty Magnaflow mufflers. Power pounds the pavement through Billet Specialties Roulettes, which spin attractive powder-coat accents inside 225/45ZR18 Michelin Pilot Sports and 255/45ZR18 Michelin Pilot Sports. And details like a notched crossmember, a fourth-generation Camaro oil pan and custom stainless brake lines keep this Chevelle fast and dependable.
Stylish and ready to roll, this Chevy's simplistic interior has been wrapped in Dynamat and decked in custom leather trim. The car's wide bench seats stretch tight covers under modern belts. In front of those thrones, an ornate dash hides an MP3-compatible, satellite-capable Alpine CD player behind a full array of clean telemetry. Beneath that dash, plush ACC carpet floats color-keyed mats under billet Lokar pedals. At the sides of that rug, hand-stitched door skins hang 5-inch Boston Acoustics Pros in front of power door locks that are wired to Remote Keyless Entry, and power windows that are connected to custom-fabricated regulators. In front of the driver, a leather-wrapped Billet Specialties steering wheel laps a tilting Flaming River column. Behind the passengers, a custom-upholstered trunk frames Boston Acoustics deck speakers. The cockpit stays cool thanks to Vintage Air climate control. And the tunes keep bumping thanks to 18-circuit Painless Wiring, which zaps a JL Audio 250/1 amp, a JL Audio 300/4 amp and a JL Audio 10W3 subwoofer that's sealed in an airtight enclosure.
