The great thing about the evolution of hot rodding is: over the past 30 years a vast array of great products has continually streamed onto the market. And presently, anyone with a check book and an affinity for going way too fast and looking way too good can build anything from state-of-the-art avant-garde to old school cool. This sweet Ford Hi-Boy, with its custom suspension, reliable V8 and classic color combination, is a ground-up build that combines the core strengths of original hot rodding with an uncompromising vision and top-notch componentry. And, if you're looking to score a fully sorted custom that mixes classic good looks with proven road manners, it's a strong candidate for your next street rod!
When you set your sights on creating a top-notch custom, you have to start with a team of professionals who know the ins and outs of fabrication and assembly. Thankfully, the folks who created this Hi-Boy certainly knew how to build an immaculate street rod. The project began roughly five years ago when an all-steel Brookville Roadster body was sourced for $25K. That body was treated to a $100K build, conducted by John Birosh of Penn Yan, New York, which crossed acute attention to detail with distinct, retro-chic flavor. And today, wrapping timeless swagger in triple deep PPG Ultra Gloss 2-stage, this awesome coupe has the kind of eye-popping appeal that'll turn heads anywhere it goes!
Thanks to high quality trim and first-rate detailing, this hot rod really puts the “class” in classic. At the front of the car, Guide 682Cs seat bright H4 candles at the base of a chromed, original-style grille that's framed by a chromed, “V8” branded headlight bar. Behind that bar, small turn signals lead chrome hood ties, which perfectly complement polished hot rod mirrors and traditional handles that spring slick suicide doors. At the top of those doors, an un-chopped roof seats tight vinyl filler above a roll-down backlite, a functional cowl vent and a swinging windshield that's cleared by an electric wiper. And at the back of the car, a traditional trunk pull shadows a polished spreader, a polished tag frame and a chrome-capped fuel tank that's framed by blended exhaust pipes and '37 bullet-style tail lamps.
In some enthusiast's minds, there's nothing worse than finding an era-correct hot rod only to fold the hood and discover something akin to a generic Chevrolet small block. With that in mind, the builders equipped this coupe with $12K worth of stroked Windsor V8 that's been professionally massaged by the speed legends at Danbury Competition Engine. At the top of that 383 cubic inch mill, an Edelbrock Performer RPM intake stacks a finned air cleaner on a braided fluid line and 500cfm Edelbrock Thunder Series carburetors. That intake pushes air and mechanically sourced fossils through Edelbrock Performer RPM heads, which cap tall Holman Moody valve covers with polished breathers. At the front of those heads, a quality MSD distributor sequences spark between an MSD Blaster 2 coil and loomed Moroso Blue Max plug wires. At the base of that distributor, billet pulleys spin a polished alternator between coated Sanderson headers. And in front of those pulleys, a quick SPAL puller fan cools a beefy Walker Cobra Z radiator. Aesthetically, the Jet Black small block fills a glossy engine bay that's finished with a chrome dipstick and polished hood supports. And at the end of the day, it all adds up to 486 dyno-proven horsepower!
Under this impressive coupe a custom suspension utilizes a roster of top notch components to provide a well-mannered driving experience. At the center of those parts, a proven McLeod clutch kicks a familiar Tremec 5-speed, which sends power to a tough Ford 9-inch that's finished with a Winters posi-traction differential and big, 4.10 gears. That drivetrain rides a boxed '32 Ford chassis, which rolls a mirrored suspension that's finished with chrome shocks, chrome hairpins, Carrera coil-overs and a chromed Ford front axle. Quick stops are provided by four polished calipers, which clamp vented discs in front of polished dust shields and braided fluid lines. A killer soundtrack is provided by hand-fabricated stainless steel exhaust, which employs polished, glasspack-style mufflers. At the corners of the car, chrome Cragar S/S wheels spin 155/80R15 BF Goodrich Radial T/As in front of 255/70R15 BF Goodrich Radial T/As. And, clean and ready to roll, this Ford's glossy black floors frame details like a big Milodon oil pan and a clean stainless fuel tank.
Inside this clean custom you'll find a hot Fire Engine Red and Matterhorn White interior that was installed by the award-winning pros at Flyboyz Street Rod Designs of Horseheads, New York. The firm bench seat folds a small armrest on period-correct narrow roll and pleat leather. At the sides of that throne, custom door panels look right at home behind traditional chrome handles. Below those panels, plush carpet seats color-keyed mats between a polished handbrake, old school spoon pedals and a classic Ford shifter. Opposite that rug, a tight headliner anchors a small courtesy lamp behind a polished mirror. At the front of the car, a body-matched dash hangs “V8” branded Classic Instruments telemetry above a crisp Panasonic head unit that floats on a custom swing-down mount. The driver commands the road through a polished Schroeder steering wheel. And at the back of the car, a completely upholstered trunk hides quality Kwik Wire wiring, complete with GM Weatherpack connectors, that, among other things, controls warm Vintage Air heat.
In short, this awesome Hi-Boy is the perfect street rod for anyone who wants a fully sorted showstopper. It features an unbeatable combination of classic good looks and proven hot rod technology wrapped in a professional build that simply cannot be duplicated for anywhere near our asking price.
