Watching show stopping customs roll through our RK Motors Charlotte showroom never gets old. But sometimes we get the feeling that the modern street rod movement has become more about show and less about go. After all, hot rod culture started with guys who drove their cars out of necessity, but raced them on dry lakes, dirt tracks and drag strips out of desire. And that desire to continually push the boundaries of both performance and appeal spawned legendary events like Pikes Peak and the Mexican Road Race. Built as an appealing mix of retro style and modern performance, this razor-sharp Ford is a direct result of what happens when a roster of top notch components meets timeless Ford steel. And if you're a discerning rodder who's looking for a car with a little more substance than chrome and bright paint, it's your one-way ticket to bigger and better things!

BODYWORK/TRIM

Built from the ground up, this awesome custom's solid fuselage began life as authentic Ford steel that, during a 6-year, body-off restoration, was stripped, solidified and converted from a sedate, 4-door sedan to a sporty, 2-door sedan. When that transformation was complete, the car was fitted with quality fiberglass fenders, married to lightweight fiberglass running boards and bathed in a vivid coat of burgundy 2-stage. And with that glossy pigment prepped and primed, this positively retro Ford mixes enough utility to hush old school skeptics with enough polish to be front row at the local car show!

A clever descriptor for this slicked off sedan might be “traditionally unique”. That's because, even though this Ford makes excellent use of common modifications, it does so in an era of conservative, billet-tinged street rodding. At the front of the car, a 1934 grille shell centers a traditional “V8” emblem between a polished bumper, polished Twolite headlights and a classy greyhound hood ornament. Speaking of the hood, stamped for 1934 and trimmed in stainless, it flows to smoked glass that's seated behind an electric wiper and polished hot rod mirrors. At the sides of that glass, traditional suicide doors hang traditional handles above aluminum steps. And at the back of the car, a second polished bumper frames a satin fuel cap and polished, LED-lit Duolamps.

ENGINE

Fold the hood and you'll find a reliable, 350 cubic inch Chevrolet small block that's been polished, rebuilt and fitted with hot Vortec heads. Revs are created when a polished and louvered air cleaner floats wind in to a lightweight aluminum intake, by way of a big 4-barrel carburetor that's sequenced to a small pressure gauge. At the perimeter of that intake, polished valve covers hang polished breathers over clean block hugger headers. Behind those breathers, a Pertronix Flame-Thrower distributor bounces spark between a polished Pertronix Flame-Thrower coil and loomed MSD Street Fire Wires. At the front of those wires, a modern serpentine drive spins a polished alternator opposite a coated Sanden AC compressor. At the front of those ancillaries, a beefy Walker radiator plays well with dual electric fans. And, despite being a thoroughly massaged piece, the Jet Black mill looks right at home in the car's compact engine compartment.

DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION

With its high power-to-weight ratio, completely modern suspension and reinforced chassis, this Ford is an absolute blast to drive! Behind the hot small block, a proven 700R4 4-speed twists torque to a snappy 10-bolt axle. That posi-traction rear end funnels power through a 4-bar rear-clip that's finished with modern coil-over-shocks. That fully sorted clip pushes a TCI front-half that's comprised of tubular control arms, a beefy TCI sway bar and two more modern coil-overs. That suspension rolls in a boxed and braced chassis that's guided by athletic rack-and-pinion steering. Stops come courtesy of four power-assisted discs. The aforementioned headers jettison spent gases through welded mufflers. And everything rolls on traditional wires, which spin stainless trim rings and “V8” branded caps inside two 145/R15 Firestone F560s and two 265/75R15 Wildcat Touring SLTs.

INTERIOR

As you probably know, old school hot rods were pretty spartan. But this classic was built as more than just some time machine replica. Pop the doors and you'll find a custom leather interior that's simple yet useful. At ground level, square-weave carpet frames a polished shifter, a polished e-brake, a billet accelerator and a steel brake pedal. In front of that shifter, a color-keyed dash hangs a full array of Auto Meter gauges behind a polished instrument panel and levers for the car's Vintage Air Gen II climate control. Seating is provided by a bench and two buckets, which tuck tight pleats beneath simple lap belts. Above those thrones, a custom headliner centers VR3 audio behind a small rearview mirror. At the sides of the passengers, custom door panels hide modern power windows behind traditional chrome handles. And in front of the driver, a vintage-look steering wheel laps a tilting column.

OUR SALE INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING DOCUMENTATION AND ACCESSORIES

* Photos of the car's bare chassis
* Miscellaneous restoration receipts
* A small stack of component manuals

Very few pre-war classics possess the kind of reliable, well-rounded performance that fuels street rodding's extravagant folklore. But this hot rod Ford was built to run, and when your foot hits the floor, that's exactly what it'll do! Tired of extravagant show queens that emphasize plastic trophies over proven performance? Want to look good AND go fast? Don't miss your chance to land this fully sorted custom!
