And presently, anyone with a check book and an affinity for going way too fast and looking way too good can build anything from state-of-the-art avant-garde to old school cool. This sweet Ford coupe, wrapping custom chassis dynamics and modern V8 power in show stopping aesthetics, is a ground-up build that combines the core strengths of original hot rodding with an uncompromising vision and top-notch componentry. BODYWORK/TRIM

Started in 2007 by B&B Street Rod of Lake Havasu, Arizona, this striking Ford's ground-up build came to a halt as B&B went out of business. While the car was assembled and drivable, it wasn't sorted, and needed quite a bit of fine-tuning. Fast-forward to 2014, when this coupe's current owner wrote a couple of checks and shipped the car to Stone Mountain Automotive of Traphill, North Carolina. And roughly a year later, this custom debuted classy Outlaw Performance fiberglass under rich Brandy Wine Burgundy 2-stage. At the front of that profile, a polished grille centers a traditional “V8” emblem between a polished bumper, polished Twolite headlights and a classy “Ford” badge. Behind that branding, a steel hood flows to smoked glass that's seated behind polished frames, polished wipers and polished hot rod mirrors. At the sides of that glass, traditional suicide doors hang traditional handles between steel running boards and snazzy cowl lamps. And at the back of the car, a second polished bumper frames polished Duolamps, a satin fuel cap, a polished trunk handle and brawny Flowmaster exhaust tips.

ENGINE

Lift the car's solid hood and you'll find the forerunner to virtually all the technology still featured in Chevrolet sports cars: GM's potent LS2 small block. At the top of that $7K mill, fancy Corvette fuel rail covers feature an appropriate Brandy Wine finish. Up front, a polished air cleaner reflects a lightweight radiator, which hangs a polished expansion tank next to an electric puller fan. Between those components, high quality ancillaries spin an attractive B&B Streetrod serpentine drive. At the sides of those pulleys, shielded exhaust manifolds ensure all the car's from-the factory performance stays from-the-factory reliable. AC Delco plug wires ensure everything communicates as it should. And, aesthetically, the aluminum mill looks fantastic, accented with niceties like braided fluid lines, trick dipsticks and a liquid-filled fuel pressure gauge.

DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION

With its great power-to-weight ratio and full Classic Street Rod Stage III chassis, this Ford is an absolute blast to drive! Behind the hot small block, a proven 4L60E 4-speed twists torque to a Currie 9-inch axle that's fitted with big, 3.50 gears. That limited-slip rear end funnels power through a polished 4-bar back-half that's finished with modern coil-over-shocks. That fully sorted clip pushes a Kugel Komponents front-half that's comprised of tubular control arms, a beefy sway bar and two more modern coil-overs. Turns come courtesy of Unisteer rack-and-pinion steering. Stops come courtesy of four power-assisted Wilwood calipers. Exhaust is jettisoned through coated pipes and coated Flowmaster mufflers. And everything rolls on traditional wire wheels, which spin gold-trimmed caps inside two 195/60R14 BF Goodrich Traction T/As and two 255/60R15 BF Goodrich Radial T/As.

INTERIOR

Pop the doors and you'll find a custom leather interior that's simple yet useful. Seating is provided by two plush buckets, which tuck tight belts behind a custom, Lokar-equipped consolette. In front of that shifter, a color-keyed dash hangs a full array of Stewart Warner telemetry above Vintage Air climate control. In front of the driver, a polished, banjo-style steering wheel laps a polished, tilting column. And a touch of convenience comes in the form of power windows and modern audio.
