Description

Is there any car that screams “MUSCLE CAR” louder than a Chevelle SS454 LS6 with racing stripes? Sure, the Mopars do a pretty good job representing power and Ford even had its share of big engine, small car glory; but ask anyone to name a few examples of classic Detroit muscle and one of their top responses will likely be Chevelle. Painted in Fathom Blue with obligatory white racing stripes, this frame off restored 1970 Chevelle has been expertly built to Super Sport 454 LS6 status and is a real show stopper!

The car rolled off the Flint Michigan assembly line in February of 1970 as a V8 Malibu sport coupe and was originally decked in two shades of green with a green fabric interior. Much more recently, it benefitted from a frame off restoration and was repainted in GM code 28 Fathom Blue and battle dressed in white SS stripes that extend from the hood to the deck lid. After factory panel alignment was attained throughout and that new paint was applied, the car was rubbed and buffed to a mirror-like shine. The paint and finish work on this particular Chevelle is simply spectacular and the body is clean and perfect. Check the high resolution photos again and notice the reflections in the paint; this is one straight car.

Arguably the most popular year for Chevelles, 1970 featured dual headlights, curvaceous quarters, and a tidy greenhouse that almost gives the car a fastback appearance. Up front you'll find perfect new headlights surrounded by new chrome housings. A chrome trimmed grille looks great featuring a new prominent SS emblem and the front bumper looks new, absent of any dimples and dings. A functional and correct cowl induction hood with hood pins was added during the restoration and features correct trim and “Cowl Induction” badging. The stainless below the new front glass is 100% untarnished, houses new windshield wipers and matches the great looking stainless window trim. At the side of the car new SS454 badges with white and red inlays serve as the focal point in the sea of Fathom Blue while new stainless trim wraps around the wheels wells and windows. A new chrome driver's side mirror and new chrome door handles look and function perfectly and at the rear of the car, new brake lights inside a new chrome bumper occupy the rear valence. A great looking black inlay with a prominent SS emblem is featured below a new chrome “Chevelle by Chevrolet” emblem and an era correct Day Chevrolet dealership emblem. This car is much, much nicer than it was originally, and there's every indication that the restoration was a high-quality job.

In 1970 the LS6 Turbo Fire 454 in the Chevelle SS was conservatively rated at 450 horsepower but likely produced well over 500 horsepower. In addition to the real deal 1970 LS6 engine block and heads, the engine bay in this Chevelle was detailed to a very high level and while road ready would also fair very well at any show. Raise the hood and you'll find a correctly functioning cowl induction system attached to a finished hood complete with correct insulation. A Holley carburetor sits on a Winter aluminum intake which features a Chevrolet Orange thermostat housing that matches the spotless Chevrolet Orange engine block. Under the carburetor, a plate stamped with the firing order for the engine complements detailed and accurate decals and factory markings throughout the engine bay. A new coil and distributor cap send sparks through new AC Delco wires across a new set of factory correct chrome valve covers. Gray factory correct GM exhaust manifolds add an interesting contrast to the orange block and connect to an aluminum true dual exhaust system. New hoses with appropriate tower clamps and new belts run to accessories which include a new correctly marked master cylinder and brake booster, a correct radiator with the appropriate warning decal on its upper support, a correct coolant overflow tank and a reproduction Delco battery. From the new wiring to the factory marks, this engine bay is as gorgeous and well done as the exterior of the car and I'm willing to bet that it would take the average muscle car connoisseur quite a bit of time to realize that this motor wasn't mounted in here 40 years ago at the Flint Michigan factory.

The chassis of this car has been restored to the highest standards. It is sprayed in original GM satin black and features all of the correct markings you'd expect to find from the factory. An era correct 3-speed GM Turbo Hydramatic 400 transmission sends power to an era correct 12 bolt Posi-Traction rear end with 4.10 gears. The suspension; leaf springs in the rear and coil springs in the front with correct spiral shocks has been rebuilt and the car retains correct front power discs and rear drums. The driveshaft appears to be new and appropriate assembly markings on the differential have been duplicated. A reproduction exhaust system, complete with resonators, runs from the gray GM manifolds to stainless tips below the rear bumper. Fresh fuel lines run between the Holley carburetor and a new reproduction fuel tank and new brake lines run from the new master cylinder to all four corners of the car. Connecting this Chevelle to the pavement is four new Goodyear Polyglas G70-14 tires mounted on 14 inch Super Sport rims with chrome trim rings and SS center caps for a completely authentic look.

During restoration, this Chevelle was equipped with the gorgeous 1970 Chevelle code 790 Ivory interior package. Pearl-esque vinyl seats and front and rear door panels, set off by a fresh black headliner and fresh black carpet complement the Fathom blue exterior of the car. The seats look excellent and don't show any signs of a rip, tear or any stretching. The door panels appear brand new and, along with the seats, feature correct trophy winning chrome and trim. Overhead, factory seat belts are tucked into their clips below the tight-fitting headliner and lap belts are clipped to the sides of a black factory console that looks as good as when it left the showroom floor. Housed within that console is a traditional horseshoe shifter for the TH400 transmission and in front of the console, hidden below the dash, is a pair of modern Summit Racing gauges; one for oil pressure and one for water temperature. That straight, black dash houses crystal clear gauges, with the odometer showing just 70182 original miles, a factory AM radio and chrome trimmed vents for the heater/defroster. It's all there and it's all well done. From the Rallye steering wheel to the vented kick panels and black package tray equipped with rear defrost, this interior is top notch in every way.

If you are looking for a documented, numbers matching 1970 Chevelle Super Sport LS6, we have one, and it's even painted Fathom Blue. But it's going to cost you $120K and few people want to shell out that kind of money for a Chevelle to drive and enjoy. This Chevelle SS LS6 tribute is half the cost of the real deal car and we are willing to bet you a buck that the guy who ends up with this Chevelle will have a lot more fun with it than the person who buys the investment grade version. We have retailed more 1970 big block cars than any company in the world over the past five years and when we say run, don't walk to pick up the phone on this one, we say it with good authority. If you are looking for a drop dead gorgeous Chevelle to cruise to local shows and throw your weight around with on the street this is YOUR car. Call today.
