BODYWORK/TRIM

Fresh out of a professional, 1,000-hour restoration that was completed in November of 2016, this sweet Chevelle reflects roughly $5,800 of Volkswagen Tornado Red 2-stage. That pigment protects a solid profile that, after being fully stripped, was fitted with fresh GM fenders and married to fresh GM quarters. That rebuild, performed by Roanoke, Virginia's Woodings Auto Body Works, totaled roughly $55K. And today, this top dog Super Sport sits as a spectacular piece of iconic American muscle that's detailed to better-than-new standards.

A quick look at our high-resolution photos reveals trim and ornamentation that remain mostly as the General specified. At the front of this Chevy's buff body, a requisite Super Sport grille hangs clear headlights and a prominent “SS396” emblem above a spotless bumper, re-chromed by the pros at Tri-City Plating, that's finished with small parking lamps. At the top of that grille, a familiar Chevelle header script leads the eye to a familiar Super Sport hood, which fronts like-new glass that's caged in polished frames and painted drip rails. At the sides of the car, bright door handles and factory mirrors reflect clean emblems, classy marker lamps and fresh fender trim. And at the back of the car, a second spotless bumper, re-chromed by the pros at Tri-City Plating, frames crisp taillights, a correct “SS396” branded valance and a familiar Chevelle deck script.

ENGINE

Check this coupe's body-matched engine bay and you'll find 396 cubic inches of Chevrolet big block that's good for roughly 360 horsepower. At that top of that spotless mill, a polished and decaled air cleaner forces wind in to a 750cfm Holley 4-barrel. At the base of that carb, stainless fuel lines snake around a clean Edelbrock Performer intake, which is anchored by a familiar HEI distributor. That proven unit swirls spark around polished, “CHEVROLET” branded valve covers with the help of loomed MSD Street Fire Wires. Those covers cage a hydraulic roller cam and hydraulic roller lifters between a polished Chevrolet breather, ceramic-coated headers and a Tornado Red block. At the front of that block, a polished Billet Specialties V-Trac system spins an Edelbrock water pump between a polished alternator, a polished AC compressor and a polished power steering pump. At the front of those ancillaries, an efficient aluminum radiator makes excellent use of a polished expansion tank and two electric puller fans. And a spry Optima gel cell sets everything in motion.

DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION

That impressive powerplant spins torque through a trusty 700R4 4-speed, which utilizes a 2,800 RPM stall to twist a narrowed 12-bolt axle. That chrome-capped axle, fitted with a posi-traction differential and 4.10 gears, rides a fully rebuilt rear-clip that's upgraded with a sturdy sway bar and 2-inch lowering springs. That lowered clip pushes a fully rebuilt front-half that frames modern power steering in 2-inch drop spindles. The aforementioned headers dump spent gases in to aluminized pipes that are fashioned around welded turbo mufflers. Stops are provided by a traditional combination of discs and drums, with the latter dressed in attractive stainless shields. At the corners of the car, polished Billet Specialties wheels spin 245/40ZR18 Nitto NT555 Extreme ZRs in front of 295/40ZR20 Nitto NT555 G2s. And everything, from this Chevy's over-restored floors and glossy chassis components to its stainless fluid lines and modified wheel tubs, is virtually spotless.

INTERIOR

Open this second-generation Chevelle's solid doors and you'll find an attractive Black interior which appears to have been completely replaced during the car's extensive restoration. Centered in those new components is a trio of fresh seats. In front of those thrones, a traditional Super Sport dash founds optional Deluxe telemetry next to a modern Alpine stereo and Vintage Air climate control. Beneath that dash, an old school horseshoe shifter surfs a factory console. The driver spins a reproduction Chevrolet Rally Wheel. And behind the passengers, a clean trunk braces crisp Kenwood speakers above a big Kicker amp and a thumpin' Kicker subwoofer.
